Corners are a source of heartache for so many stylists but they don’t have to be.
As I started sewing towards my ending corner on this guest I took the time to look ahead and see how her scalp was reacting.
The scalp was slightly puckered and the corner was pulled taught - and I hadn’t even gotten to that point yet.
Continuing to sew would only create more tension and more drag so instead I stopped sewing and adjusted the corner.
All it needed was a slight wiggle to push the hair within the corner bead up to create a buffer or a bit of “slack”.
With the buffer/slack in place I pinned the corner gently, making sure to not undo my work by pinning it down tight (that would defeat the purpose right?).
All of that took less than 2 minutes but it will make a world of difference in the comfortability of her row and the health of her scalp as her row grows out.
To be transparent with you I have unknowingly spread incorrect information on this very subject in the past.
I put my trust in a way of thinking without taking the time to means test it.
Once I stopped looking to others for all the answers and started doing my own experimentation and trialing I realized some very important things about beadwork:
1. Tension is not inherently bad. Excess tension IS.
2. Each clients scalp has a different resistance level to tension.
3. Sometimes tension is necessary and can be used within your beadwork as a stabilizing force.
4. Select clients have an extremely low threshold for hair loss - these clients CANNOT all be approached in the same way.
5. Having higher hair density does not always equate to having a higher threshold for hair loss.
6. Your beadwork is the culprit 9 times out of 10 - not your clients homecare.
The last one is especially important because when we shift blame to our clients we automatically stop analyzing OUR role.
This is not meant to discourage you - in fact I want this to INSPIRE you.
We can only fix what we acknowledge.
Instead of feeling dread about a potential issue you caused let yourself feel curious.
What could you potentially tweak to improve your results?
Sometimes the answer is simply: be mindful.
Look at what the scalp is telling you -
Lots of excess shed? Try using less tension on your bead section. Try adjusting how much you are rotating your wrist - we don’t want too much over-direction either.
Sores on the scalp? Make sure there is enough space between the scalp and your bead - this will vary based on bead section length, width, and the angle the bead lays from the scalp. Mind your stitching pattern - are you cinching too tight? Adding way too many stitches?
Beads falling out? Is there too much hair in the bead? Too little? Is your section too wide?
Even when you miss the mark there is always an opportunity to grow.
