Surfboards in the ocean. Three of us there at five in the morning. The witnesses and the celebrant came a few hours later.
Roman had lived in Sydney and fallen in love with the place before he even met Petra. He wanted her to see it. That was the reason. They paddled out on surfboards and said their vows in the water, and that evening they drove up the coast and swam with dolphins, and I wasn’t there for that last part and I think that’s probably right.
These photos are from the early morning. Before anyone else arrived. Just the three of us and that coast and whatever was starting to happen with the light.
Ten years. I’m still glad I was there for the part I was there for.

I was not there for that part.
And I'll be honest, ten years later there's still something in me that wishes I had been. Not to photograph it. I didn't want to photograph it. I just would have liked to see it. Two people, the evening of their wedding, somewhere up the New South Wales coast, swimming with fucking dolphins because the day just kept going and that's apparently what happened next.
But maybe that's the point.
Some things don't need a photographer. Some days are allowed to keep going after the cameras are put away, into territory that doesn't get documented, that exists only for the people inside it. The dolphins happened. It counts. Nobody has to see it for it to have been real.

Irish couple on holiday. Videographers themselves, he's also a tattoo artist. They knew exactly what performing for a camera looks like. So they just didn't.
Bondi does something to people around day three. The pace changes, the shoulders drop, something about being 17,000 kilometers from anything that normally requires you to show up as a version of yourself.
(Some sessions stay with you. I'm still not entirely sure why this one does.)

That was Rømø. Part of a workshop I taught called See. Feel. Create. The day before, same conditions, storm all morning, then it cleared completely. Sun, soft light, the kind of afternoon that looks like a screensaver. Nobody cared. Every photographer there already had what they needed. The storm had given them everything.
I think about that a lot. How much energy we spend waiting for conditions to cooperate, better light, less wind, a day that behaves. And what actually happens when it doesn't. You work with what you have. And sometimes what you have is more than you planned for.

This session happened at the last gathering I made it to. 2019. That's fucking long ago. Old villa in the Black Forest. Used to be a rehab clinic. David Hasselhoff is allegedly in the guestbook. (I still don't know if that's true. But it fits.)
The group has changed a lot since then. Familiar faces gone, a lot of new ones in. There's a trip planned for later this year. I haven't met most of them yet.
Photographing a photographer is strange. You both know exactly what's happening. There's nowhere to hide. Luis opened the door anyway. I'm still grateful for that.

The bathroom was my idea. Candles all around, warm water, those old tiles. A quiet settled in that I couldn't have directed.

And when you look at where they come from, a lot of them are rooted in some seriously fucked up ideas about women and ownership.
Father „giving away“ the bride? Property transfer from father to husband. White dress = purity? Virginity obsession. Taking his name? Erasing her identity. Asking permission from her father? She’s not his property.
Look, if these traditions mean something to YOU, do them. Reclaim them. Make them yours. That’s beautiful.
But let’s be honest about what they were designed for. Control mechanisms dressed up as romance from a time when women had zero autonomy.
And we just keep doing them because „it’s tradition“ without asking why.
This is why so many couples are choosing to elope. Not running away, but running TOWARD something that’s actually theirs.
When you strip away 70+ guests and everyone’s expectations, you get to ask: What do WE actually want? What traditions feel true to US?
Here’s what I see when I photograph elopements: couples who walked themselves down the aisle or didn’t have one at all. Who wrote vows that made them cry. Who created rituals that meant something instead of performing ones that didn’t.
Question everything. Keep what aligns with YOUR values. Ditch what doesn’t serve you.
You don’t owe anyone these traditions. Keep your name, walk together, skip the father-daughter dance, create something new—it’s YOUR choice.
Realizing most traditions don’t serve you? That’s what elopements are for. To build something completely, unapologetically yours.
Your love, your rules. End of story.

I'm Björn, a Destination Wedding & / Elopement Photographer from Hamburg, Germany. I married my wonderful wife Jana last year during the pandemic, I like cats (by now), have been living vegan for 20 years, love to spend time outside on my bike.
I was born in 1977, the year Punk Rock and Star Wars also saw the light of day, I guess that explains a certain rebel streak in me.
Throughout my life, I've had a number of jobs. Some were fun, others not so much. However, I understood from quite early on that I had to do things my way and do things that were fun and fulfilling for me, so that I wouldn't feel dull.
Sadly, I experienced that my dad lived for work, and didn't work for living. He had to leave way too early. I don't want that kind of life for myself.
A few years ago I found myself on the verge of a burnout and started looking for alternatives, fortunately photography found me.
Working full-time in photography for about ten years now, I now can say: I'm very fortunate and privileged to have found this passion in myself and a way to make a living off it.
