Sex differences in resistance training fatigue and recovery have been explored previously, but nearly all studies utilized protocols that don’t represent typical practices at the gym. The idea behind this project was to use methods that better modeled what training looks like.

Our study involved repeated bench press sets of 5 reps at 75%1RM with 90s between until failure. Load-velocity testing for estimated 1RM strength was used in the subsequent 3 days to monitor recovery. 42 experienced bench pressers (21 males & females) completed all testing measures.

Females performed significantly more reps in the fatiguing protocol outlined above, yet both sexes exhibited similar recovery in strength as well as perceived soreness. Interestingly from our velocity data, it appears that females may be able to recover faster during the rest interval between sets.

➡ Coaches and practitioners should actively inform women with PCOS that the popular narrative of a “slow metabolism” is not supported by evidence. Based on the minimal 30 kcal/day difference, there is no physiological need to recommend more severe or restrictive energy deficits.

➡ Since metabolic rate is not the primary barrier, management strategies should focus beyond calorie counting. Practitioners should emphasise a holistic approach that includes addressing psychological stressors, body image concerns, sleep, and promoting overall well-being and habits.

➡ Given that REE is not compromised, coaches should direct energy toward ensuring consistent adherence to a program, promoting high quality of exercise execution, and building self-efficacy, rather than concentrating on the need to “overcome” a metabolic disadvantage.

➡ Recognising the high prevalence of disordered eating and body image distress in women with PCOS, practitioners should adopt weight-neutral, empowering language. This helps prevent restrictive mindsets and fosters a more sustainable and supportive PCOS management path.

EPC DAY 2 📚2️⃣

EPC Day two started off with a hands-on session led by the incredible Mike Tuchscherer diving into Introduction to Velocity-Based Training (Practical),

followed by our “Come Train With Us” event where both lifters and speakers came in to throw around a few weights and train together

Huge thank you to all our speakers, lifters, and attendees for making this weekend one to remember. A fantastic weekend of learning, lifting, and leveling up the sport together. Until next time! 🖤❤️

Our first three speakers from EPC in 2017 are back together now in 2025!

We’re excited to give a warm welcome back to Eric, Greg, and Mike for EPC25.

If you know any of these guys, or if you’ve attended our conferences before, you already know the wealth of knowledge they bring to the table. This year, each speaker will deliver their own talk, and Mike will also lead an additional workshop on Sunday.

Eric’s talk, "Hypertrophy Training for Powerlifters: Why, How, When?" will explore the importance of hypertrophy for powerlifting and how it fits into a lifter’s programming. Learn how building muscle strategically can increase your strength potential and lay the foundation for bigger lifts.

Greg’s talk, "Translating Research Into Training," will guide you through how to read, interpret, and apply research so it actually informs and enhances your training. Cut through the noise, deepen your understanding, and make smarter, more insightful decisions in the gym.

Mike’s talk, "Introduction to Velocity-Based Training," will take a two-part approach.

On Saturday, Mike will cover the theory: explore the principles of velocity-based training, understand how bar speed relates to strength, and learn how to autoregulate your training with VBT.

On Sunday, he will lead a practical gym session with a select group of attendees, working up to some heavy singles while tracking velocity and seeing how the principles from Saturday can integrate into your own training. (This session is for full weekend ticket holders.)

New Podcast

In this conversation, Steve Hall and Greg Nuckols delve into the complexities of training volume, its impact on hypertrophy and strength, and the nuances of scientific research in exercise science.

The conversation also touches on the philosophical aspects of science, particularly the tension between rationalism and empiricism, and how this affects interpretations of research findings in the fitness industry.

Nuckols also explores the relationship between strength and hypertrophy, the challenges of extrapolating short-term study results to long-term outcomes, and provides practical recommendations for optimizing training volume.

You’ll frequently encounter fitness influencers writing off the results of any study hypertrophy they don’t like by claiming that the results are due to muscle swelling or edema. However, the basis for this concern (or criticism, depending on the context) is quite weak.

Scroll through to learn more.

This is our final post from our recent article about training volume. However, the article contains a lot more information than we can cover on IG (including quite a bit more info about swelling). So, if this topic interests you, you can read the article here:
A recent series of meta-regressions from Pelland and colleagues found that training volume had different impacts on hypertrophy and strength gains.

While the benefits of training volume for hypertrophy trended up past 20+ sets per week, the benefits for strength gains seemed to top out at around 5 sets per week.

This apparent divergence between strength and hypertrophy outcomes has led some influencers to conclude that hypertrophy also tops out at relatively low training volumes. After all, additional muscle growth should positively influence strength gains. So, it’s argued that the apparent increase in muscle growth with higher training volumes is actually the result of muscle swelling that’s still present when researchers assess hypertrophy post-training – usually 48-72 hours after the last workout the subjects perform. (For more context, see our recent shitpost on the topic – “A massive new breakthrough in hypertrophy research.")

Scroll through to learn more about why that interpretation is flawed, and why higher training volumes tend to facilitate more muscle growth and larger strength gains.

This is the second of three IG posts we’ll be sharing about some of the current controversies related to training volume. But, they’re all going to be pulled from a new article we published on the website, which goes into considerably more depth than we can go here on Instagram.

If this topic interests you, we really think you’ll enjoy it.
