It’s very common for puppy classes to focus heavily on obedience skills like sit, stay, drop, or go to bed and while these are going to be important skills as your puppy grows, teaching your puppy how to follow a lure with a good level of motivation allows you to create those behaviours much more efficiently when the time comes. Strong foundations like this make everything easier later. Here’s how to get started:
-Place some food between your thumb and forefinger, with most of the food hidden. This gives your puppy a clear target while protecting your fingers from those sharp puppy teeth!
-Bring your hand to your puppy’s nose to get their attention, letting them sniff the food but not eat it.
-Slowly move your hand away and encourage your puppy to follow the lure with their nose.
-The moment they follow, mark by saying “yes” and reward them
-For the first few sessions, reward every step or two.
-From there, increase the distance your puppy has to move before they gets the food
-As they do well, move your hand quickly in short bursts in different directions—left, right, toward you, and in a circle to build motivation and a pup that loves to work with you. This is exactly the kind of real-world puppy raising we cover inside our Puppy Starter Course. Comment LURE below and we’ll send you instant access to the full course or link in bio.

Often, our puppy clients hear they need to “socialise” their puppy, so they let them play with every dog they meet. What they don’t realise is that every interaction a young pup has helps shape their future social behaviour, for better or worse.
While it’s necessary for your puppy to have social experiences with other dogs it’s important to get the balance right.
With Sport, we’re very intentional about who he spends time with. We don’t go to dog parks to “socialise” with other dogs. Instead: 🐕 We set up playdates with socially competent adult dogs for him to interact with 🐕 We keep interactions with unfamiliar dogs short and sweet 🐕 We play together around other dogs to reinforce that play with me is fun and maintain neutrality (the outside of fenced parks are great for this) 🐕 We meet friends with dogs for coffee or a pint at the pub (or go for walks together) to teach the dogs that hanging out with mates isn’t always about high-arousal play
🐕 When Sport was a very young puppy, we focused on setting up playdates with older, social dogs who could show him the ropes
The social interactions your dog has especially while they’re young are so important. How do you choose which dogs your pup spends time with?

It breaks my heart to say we sadly and unexpectedly said goodbye to Elliott at 9:40am this morning.
Our best friend and constant companion for just shy of 13 years. You touched so many people and so many dogs. You were the one that started it all.
We gave you the best life we could, and you returned it tenfold.
Rest easy, our sweet boy. You will be so deeply missed.
