I spent years trying to heal my mind....

Reading the books.
Listening to the podcasts.
Trying to forgive.
Trying to move on.
Trying to “think positive.”

I thought healing meant not thinking about it anymore.

Not being angry.
Not crying.
Not letting it affect me.

I thought if I could just change my thoughts, I could change my life.

But here’s what I got wrong…

The problem wasn’t that my mind didn’t understand what happened.

The problem was that my nervous system never felt safe.

When you’ve lived through trauma, addiction, betrayal, loss, chaos, or years of survival mode, your body remembers.

You can understand something logically and still feel it physically.

You can forgive someone and still have a nervous system that’s exhausted.

You can leave the situation and still feel trapped inside it.

For me, healing didn’t start in a journal.

It started on a treadmill.

Crying.
Walking.
Breathing.

Over and over again.

Eventually those walks became workouts.
Those workouts became strength.
And little by little, my body started learning that the danger was over.

That’s when everything changed.

Healing isn’t forgetting.

Healing is teaching your body that it no longer has to survive what you’ve already survived.

If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or constantly feeling like you’re carrying the weight of the world…

Your body may be asking for support, not more "self-improvement".

💛 If you’re ready to focus on your energy, your health, your nervous system, and your peace, comment the word PEACE and I’ll send you information about my coaching programs.

♥️Joanna, addiction widow
For years, I thought healing meant learning how not to let someone else’s addiction affect me.🥹

I thought if I stayed strong enough, ignored enough, tolerated enough, forgave enough, prayed enough, I could somehow create peace in the middle of chaos.

I was wrong.

Trying not to absorb someone else’s chaos is NOT healing.

Pretending it’s not happening is NOT healing.

Walking on eggshells is NOT healing.

Constantly managing your reactions so you don’t make things worse is NOT healing.

Healing requires safety. And active addiction creates the opposite.

I know this statement won’t land softly for everyone, but after living it and after hearing from thousands of women, I believe it with my whole heart:

Healing cannot happen when active addiction is in the home.

Because addiction is not neutral. It doesn’t quietly sit in the corner and mind its business. It consumes attention, energy, finances, trust, relationships, and peace.

And yes, I believe that when someone repeatedly brings active addiction into their home, they have become abusive, regardless of what label you put on addiction.

No one is healing while trying to survive that environment.

Not the spouse.

Not the children.

Not the family.

For a long time, I never imagined I’d be talking about addiction. My career has always been health, fitness, behavior change, and helping women transform their lives.

But life has a way of showing you where you’re needed.

And what I’ve realized is that there are so many women fighting their way back to themselves after years of losing themselves in someone else’s addiction.

Women trying to rebuild their confidence.

Their nervous system.

Their identity.

Their health.

Their peace.

That is the work I’m being called to do.

Because healing isn’t just emotional. Your body keeps score too. You cannot heal your nervous system while completely neglecting your health.

If you’re ready to rebuild your confidence, your mental health, and your body, I’m opening five spots this month for women who are ready to choose themselves again.

Comment PEACE and I’ll send you the details and special pricing for my new program.

Let's GoGetHER to
That’s a pretty "cool" statement....😮‍💨

And while enabling absolutely exists, I think we’ve lost the ability to distinguish between enabling and surviving.

Because most women aren’t trying to help addiction continue. Who the fuck would want that?

They’re trying to protect themselves and their children from what addiction is capable of destroying.

Enabling helps someone avoid the consequences of their choices.

Surviving is trying to minimize the fallout of those choices on innocent people.

Those are not the same thing.

And I wish someone would have looked me in the eyes years ago and said:

“Joanna, if you’re married to someone in active addiction, you are in an abusive relationship.”

There. I fucking said it.

Not because the person struggling is evil.

Not because they don’t deserve compassion.

But because addiction demands a price from everyone around it, and far too often that price is paid by spouses and children.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The broken promises.

The financial devastation.

The walking on eggshells.

The constant fear.

If we described those things in any other relationship, most people would immediately recognize it as abuse.

But when addiction is involved, families are told to be more patient. More understanding. Give it more time. After all, it’s a “disease.”

Meanwhile, she becomes responsible for holding together everything addiction keeps tearing apart.

Newsflash.

She is not your rehab center.

Your children are not your treatment plan.

And if you’re reading this, I need you to hear me:

You have been drafted into a war you had no business fighting.

One that can cost you your peace, your health, your identity, your confidence, your joy and sometimes almost everything.

Please don’t forget that you are worth fighting for too.

Your life matters too.

Someone else’s life is not more important than yours.

And no matter what anyone tells you, you do not have to sacrifice your life because someone else refuses to choose theirs.

Choosing yourself is hard.

But not choosing yourself has a cost too.

In my experience, it costs you everything.

If you feel me on this... comment SURVIVOR because you are one!
🦋Joanna
One thing I will never understand is why the family’s experience with addiction is treated like a footnote.🙄

I cannot tell you how dismissive it feels to spend years carrying the weight of someone else’s addiction only to be told you’re codependent, enabling, or that you just don’t understand.

Meanwhile, you’re trying to keep the lights on.

Protect your finances.

Raise your children.

Create stability while living with someone who has the ability to dismantle everything you’ve worked so hard to build.

And before someone says it…

Personal responsibility and compassion can exist at the same time.

Yes, addiction is a disease for some.

But nobody accidentally wakes up addicted.

There was a first drink.
A first pill.
A first hit.

A first choice.

That doesn’t mean addiction isn’t real.

It means responsibility is too.

What I struggle with is how often the families become invisible in the conversation.

The spouse.
The children.
The parents.

The people absorbing the chaos while everyone else focuses on helping the person creating it.

If you’ve lived this like I have, your perspective has probably shifted over time too.

Because once your nervous system starts healing…
Once you’re no longer in survival mode…
Once the chaos stops feeling normal…

You look back and think,

“What the hell did I just live through?”

That’s why I keep having these conversations.

Not because they’re easy.

Not because they don’t still hurt.

But because I know there are women living in the trenches of this right now who feel completely alone.

And if that’s you, I want you to know that I see you.

I’d love to hear from people who have actually lived this.

What was the moment you realized what addiction had really cost you?
👇🏻
Ask any woman who nearly lost herself because of someone else’s addiction.

Ask her what it feels like to spend years carrying responsibilities that were never hers.

Ask her what it feels like to lie awake at night wondering if everyone is safe.

Ask her what it feels like to become so focused on surviving someone else’s choices that she forgets she has a life of her own.

Then ask her what happened when she finally chose herself.

The answer probably won’t be pretty.

Because the truth is, her kids saw the fight.

They saw the tears.
They saw the exhaustion.
They saw her keep showing up when she had nothing left to give.

So if she protects her peace now…
if she sets boundaries now…
if she walks away from chaos now…
if she seems unapologetic about who she allows into her life now…

It’s because she earned that peace.

And after fighting that hard to find herself again, she doesn’t care who understands it.

Especially not people who never lived it.

🦋Joanna, a voice for women forced to fight....

I’m looking for 5 women this month who are ready to choose themselves.

Your health.
Your energy.
Your fitness.
Your peace.

Potential.

Such a dangerous word when you build your life around somebody else’s.

Because potential is not reality.
It’s possibility.

And possibility means nothing if nobody does anything with it.

A relationship can have potential.
A person can have potential.
Recovery can have potential.

But potential can also sit untouched for years.

And I think one of the saddest things I’ve learned is how many people abandon their own lives waiting for someone else to become who they could be.

That’s what addiction does to families.

It consumes energy.
It consumes peace.
It consumes focus.
It consumes years.

You become emotionally invested in who someone might become while slowly losing yourself in the process.

And people who have lived this will immediately understand what I mean when I say: 👉🏻you can lose your own potential trying to save someone else’s.

Not because you’re weak.
Not because you didn’t love hard enough.
But because surviving addiction inside a family system is exhausting.

And this is why language matters.🦋

Because eventually you need words for what’s happening to you.

Words like:
self-abandonment.
boundaries.
grief.
survival.
healing.

Without language, people stay stuck in cycles they cannot explain.

No one can tell you what to do.
Just like no one can force someone struggling with addiction to recover.

But eventually you will begin to notice what it is costing you.

And one day you’ll ask yourself a very hard question:

Whose potential is really being lost here?

Because addiction doesn’t only steal from the person struggling.

It steals from the people loving them too.

If you’re going to bet on someone…
please make sure you’re betting on yourself too.

You only get one life.

And if you’ve spent so much time surviving, saving, fixing, waiting, or carrying other people that you’ve lost yourself in the process…

I created a new group coaching program for women rebuilding after chaos, burnout, self-abandonment, and emotional exhaustion.

A place to heal.
Reconnect.
Build confidence.
Regulate your nervous system.
And remember who you are again.

Comment PEACE and I’ll send you the info.

Stay safe o
Over the last 3 1/2 years, I’ve learned a lot about what my family was really living through while loving someone struggling with addiction.

And I know these conversations make people uncomfortable.
But silence is where so many families disappear.

Healing starts with honesty.
It starts with distance.
With perspective.
With finally pulling your face far enough away from the picture to realize the story you were living inside of was never as small as you thought it was.

Because when you’re in survival mode, you can’t always see clearly.
You just keep trying to hold everything together.
Keep everyone alive.
Keep functioning.
Keep hoping.

Until one day you step back…
and realize you were disappearing too.

I don’t have every answer for your journey.
And I’m not here to tell you what your next step should be.

But I do want to remind you of something I wish more people would say out loud:

You are worth saving too.
You are worth choosing too.
And your life matters too.

Not later.
Not once sobriety is chosen.
Not once everyone else is finally okay.

Now.

Stay safe out there.
Love, Joanna

I saw my husband three days before he died.

And I say my husband because although we were recently divorced due to his alcohol addiction, our intention was never to end our story. We separated so he could heal away from the family. The addiction was affecting all of us. 🥹

For four months, he was doing phenomenal in AA.
I truly believed he was getting better.
I believed we’d find each other again.

Then things changed.

He started missing work.
The military grew concerned.
He was eight months from retirement… and then he went missing.

When we finally found him, what I saw was more devastating than the phone call that would come days later.

Drugs like meth and heroin change people fast.

The man I loved for eighteen years was no longer himself.

He was terrified.
Childlike.
Completely broken.

I hugged him.
I told him we’d get him help.

Then he asked me something I still carry.

“I just want to come home. I’ll stay in the basement. You won’t even know I’m there.”

And I said no.😔

Not because I didn’t love him.
But because he didn’t belong at home.
He belonged in rehab.

I coordinated treatment that day.
I put him in the car with a friend.
We were supposed to meet them there.

They never showed up.😭

Instead, he was taken back to his friend's house in Nebraska.
My calls went unanswered.
And my husband died on his couch three days later.

For years, I replayed that moment searching for peace.

Until a mentor told me something that changed everything:

“What happened couldn’t have happened any other way because it didn't. Your suffering isn’t from the outcome.
It’s from resisting it and not accepting it."

Choices were made.
I did my best to protect my children, myself, and the man I loved.

And I had to chose to make peace with that.

I don’t share this story to bring shame or judgment.
I share it to turn pain into purpose.
To let our story be held in love not resentment or bitterness.

And if you’ve loved someone in addiction or you’re still loving someone in it...

You did the best you could then.
You are doing the best you can now.

You were operating from love.
You still are.

Which means, no matter the outcome

you didn’t and can't get it wrong.🫶🏼
Choosing yourself isn’t selfish.
It’s essential.

Because when you disappear inside survival, caretaking, trauma, or “just getting through,” the cost isn’t only yours, it ripples through everything you touch.

What I do isn’t about fixing women.
It’s about helping them reconnect with the version of themselves that went quiet, tired, or buried under life.

For some, that looks like strength.
For others, it looks like peace, confidence, energy, or finally feeling at home in their body again.

Whatever it needs to mean for you, you get to choose it.

Taking time away from coaching and from the women I deeply love working with was painful for me. Coaching has always been part of who I am. But stepping back was necessary. I needed space to grieve, to heal, and to come back to myself before I could guide anyone else home.

And now, being back supporting women through their own transformations feels grounded, aligned, and honest in a way it never could have before.

If there’s a version of you that’s asking to surface again…
If you feel the pull to reconnect…
𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐭𝐨 𝐆𝐨𝐆𝐞𝐭𝐇𝐄𝐑.🫶🏼

Please know, if you schedule a call with me, this isn’t a cookie-cutter program or a generic plan. This is deep, intentional work built around you.
Your body.
Your story.
Your patterns.
Your season.

This is about releasing what no longer serves you and building into your life what’s been missing from the inside out. And it’s the only way real, lasting transformation happens.

If you’d like a free health blueprint call to explore what that could look like for you, comment COACH below and I’ll send you an application 🤍

It’s been almost 3 years.
And somehow… it feels like forever and yesterday all at the same time.

Grief is strange like that.
It reshapes time.
You move forward, but part of you stays in the moment everything changed.

These were some of the last videos I ever took of him.
If I had known… I would’ve memorized every second.
The way he moved. The way he laughed. The way he looked at me.

He didn’t just serve his country.
He served our family with his whole heart.
And when he died, a piece of me went with him.

But I hold on to what I can.
These videos. These memories. These quiet reminders of the man who loved us so well.

If you’ve lost someone, you know.
You don’t ever stop missing them you just learn to carry them differently.
