Ethnography of the Body and Material — Slowness and Depth in an Accelerated Society
In Venice, where the city itself becomes a living site of art, Ethnography of the Body and Material — Slowness and Depth in an Accelerated Society, held in parallel with the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, opens today.
Spanning approximately 500 square meters across two floors of the historic Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina in central Venice, the exhibition adopts a craft-based approach as a critical lens through which contemporary art is reread and reinterpreted. Curated by Yuji Akimoto and Designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast, the exhibition unfolds as a spatial and bodily experience, encouraging visitors to engage with the works through movement, proximity, and duration.
These works embody the “slowness” and “depth” inherent in the act of making. Rather than presenting meanings that can be instantly understood, they ask for time, attention, and sustained engagement from the viewer. This exhibition is still an unfinished story.
Through this immersive spatial experience, we hope you will weave your own story within it.
We warmly welcome you to visit.

Curated by Yuji Akimoto, Artistic Director of Go for Kogei, the exhibition features approximately 100 works by 10 Japanese artists whose practices are rooted in material-driven, craft-based approaches.
Rather than positioning craft as a discrete or secondary category, the exhibition advances a “craft-based approach” as a critical lens through which contemporary art can be reconsidered. In doing so, it foregrounds embodied knowledge, sustained engagement with materials, and the gradual accumulation of gestures over time.
The key themes are “slowness” and “depth.” In a contemporary society where information and consumption continue to accelerate, this exhibition sheds light on another sense of time and embodied perception inherent in the act of making itself.
Throughout the exhibition period, we sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

The key themes are “slowness” and “depth.” In a contemporary society where information and consumption continue to accelerate, this exhibition sheds light on another sense of time and embodied perception inherent in the act of making itself.
The exhibition design is created by architect Kulapat Yantrasast, who introduces scaffold-like temporary structures into the historic space. By layering this temporary architectural element within the palazzo, visitors are invited to physically experience the time and processes embedded within the works.
Since modernity, contemporary art has often been shaped by values such as formal innovation, medium specificity, and artistic autonomy, while forms of knowledge rooted in the body, repetition, and duration have been marginalized. This exhibition challenges these frameworks from within, proposing a shift away from understanding artworks as fixed, resolved objects toward viewing them as ongoing processes in which the relationship between body and material continues to unfold.

It is conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from Piazza San Marco, the city’s central square, and only 5 minutes on foot from the Rialto Bridge, one of the most famous bridges spanning the Grand Canal.
The palazzo is also close to the exhibition venues of the International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, with many notable art projects unfolding throughout the surrounding area.
One of the charms of Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina is its architecture, which evokes a deep accumulation of time. Facing a small canal, the building seems to move at the gentle pace of the flowing water beside it.

May 9 to November 22, 2026 at Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina
In Venice, canals and narrow alleys weave into an organic urban labyrinth. As the opening of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia approaches, art projects begin to unfold across the city.
Located in the historic Santa Marina district, Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina is a former aristocratic residence that embodies the architectural and cultural heritage of this city shaped by water.
Rather than a museum or white cube, this exhibition inhabits a living Venetian palazzo. Light and atmosphere shift throughout the day, creating a site-specific environment that exists only in this moment.
Experience the works through the rhythm of a space where time itself feels alive.

Not merely to be viewed, but to be experienced.
One of the defining aspects of this exhibition is that the works do not present meanings that can be immediately understood; instead, they invite viewers into a slower, more sustained engagement.
Featuring ten artists, the exhibition is conceived as a continuous, immersive experience—an environment to be encountered as a whole.
As you move through the space—walking, pausing, and shifting your perspective while engaging with the materials—your own body, too, becomes part of this small ethnography.

“In a time when information and consumption continue to accelerate, the exhibition seeks to reconsider the act of “making,” and to restore a different sense of time and physical perception inherent in that process ― what we describe here as slowness and depth. The participating artists engage closely with their materials, working with their hands and dedicating time to the formation of each work. While the exhibition presents a wide range of materials, what is equally compelling is the diversity in how those materials are interpreted and approached, resulting in a rich and multifaceted presentation.”

ARTISTS
Yui Wata
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 2000, Wata earned a master’s degree in craft at Kanazawa College of Art in 2025. All fabrics are created through the repetitive patterns of weaving, yet Wata finds her creative playground in the narrow spaces between threads. Even seemingly flat fabrics have a semi-three-dimensional structure formed by intertwined threads, and she explores this by creating sculptural works that rise taller than herself. Her creative process always begins with manually plying threads. She also undertakes the labor-intensive process of dyeing threads with earth. For Wata, who says, “I just spontaneously sought a primitive process of creation,” these choices were an inevitable fate. Although she considers her sculptural approach—which uses the weight of the fabric itself—as primitive, it echoes her artistry of emphasizing materials and techniques, such as shifting qualities of plying and weaving from the top to the bottom. Through this process, Wata pursues a primal beauty created by humans. However, this pursuit is not about going back to the past, but rather a search for a synchronous beauty that transcends time and culture.
Her major exhibitions include Go for Kogei 2024 (Iwase Area, Toyama Prefecture, 2024) and Kuma experiment 2023-24 vol.6 Haptics in Everyday Life (Kuma Gallery, Tokyo, 2024). Major awards include the MUFG Special Award at Forbes Japan 30 Under ) and the President’s Award at the 67th Kanazawa College of Art Graduation Works (2024). Her work is included in the collection of the Kanazawa College of Art.
