Some come through referrals — from people who have worked with an Architect, enjoyed the journey, and are happy with the final environment they received. That, in my view, is the best way. Trust already exists before the first meeting.
Others begin by asking around and collecting names. They visit websites, Instagram pages, and project portfolios. But often they end up seeing so much work from so many firms that they struggle to decide how to move forward.
Some clients visit offices, meet Architects personally, and have detailed conversations before deciding whom to appoint and enter into a contract with. This is a fair and healthy process.
But there is another kind of client.
They visit multiple Architects without disclosing it, make each one believe the project is moving forward with them, and collect ideas, schemes, and concepts on the promise of an appointment that may never happen.
This, unfortunately, is Unethical!
It shows little regard for the time, thought, and professional value Architects bring to the table. And it happens far more often than people realise.
What can prevent this?
Architects should avoid giving away Design work before formal appointment and receipt of the advance fee. Once appointed, work should proceed stage by stage, with professional billing at every stage.
This approach protects not only the Architect, but also the Client and the profession itself. It creates clarity, commitment, and mutual respect.
Of course, long-standing clients and repeat collaborations are different. Relationships built over time operate on trust and understanding.
I have experienced all of the above over the years, and each experience teaches you how to handle new clients better.
And sometimes, if the relationship does not feel right in the beginning, it is perfectly alright not to work together!
