I am amazed how this piece can be an improvisation! Pure art, expression of human genius!
I understand the great influence that Tournemire had in all future organists and composers of his time. His improvisations were well know to his contemporaries, and the church filled up every time he played.
Moreover it is wonderful how Franck’s organ in St. Clotilde spread the music of great composers, such as Franck, Tournemire and Langlais..

Récit de Tierce en Taille for me is like a space-time fragment stopped in time. I feel in this music the atmosphere of a bygone century, I hear a melancholy tone and I imagine an organist in the dim light, playing this intense music in a great cathedral.
It is an attempt to translate a state of mind into music… a music that warms the soul!!

the Prelude, with bright tones, gives dynamism to the composition. Its final part greatly contrasts the previously established character, and dramatic chords break out, which leave you breathless. the Fugue instead begins as a breath of fresh air after the storm. The lightness distinguishes It, and the pedal part is really impressive, with its long progressions.

Joke aside, this is the first time you have seen me play by heart, so I take this opportunity to talk about mechanical memory!
900’ Music is full of complicated and dissonant passages impossible to memorize, since this type of music is not usually “melodious and easy to remember”.
In this case, instead of waiting for divine illumination, I use mechanical memory, that is a type of study method based on repetitions, in order to learn music thanks to the muscular reflex of the hands.
It’s simple but you need a lot of patience: you must take a complicated page of music and divide it into small part, then you begin to repeat these parts as if you were training in the gym: for example, the speed of a piece to be achieved is 150 the quarter note: so repeat each line of the page 5 times with metronome 80, then 5 times at 90, then 5 time at 100 and so on until you reach 150. We must continue even if we begin to be sure of ourselves and want to go on with the other pages.
The goal is to develop a muscle memory, so that each page is a series of memorized movements, that the muscles of the hand remembered in step with the mind.
ATTENTION! This method is useful for studying, but never rely on muscle memory to play by heart during a concert, it would be madness 😂

Certainly having met Guillou, and having perfected some of his compositions with him, motivated me a lot, which is why every time I play this Toccata I am really exited.
I am against the idea that a student has to reach complicated repertoires gradually, as in my opinion enthusiasm and the desire to do can push us beyond all limits, conquering the necessary technique directly by practicing on the piece.
This Toccata in particular could be an example of how I studied a piece bigger than me, managing to carry it out successfully. Obviously, the route was very bumpy, but at the end, I arrived at my destination! ✌🏻😊

The first time I heard this part of Offertoire from the Pentecost Mass, my blood froze 🥶
The stops used by Messiaen with these chords are sublime, and evoke an indefinite and mysterious atmosphere in my mind. The darkness of what is not visible to human eyes, which slowly clears up thanks to faith.
