Woman power—or misogyny?
The Bacchae by Euripides is one of my favourite Greek tragedies. It tells the story of the women of Thebes who leave the city to follow Dionysus into the mountains, where they take part in bacchic rituals—states of dance, trance, and ecstatic release.
This story speaks to me about women’s power—but also about how that power is perceived, feared, and repressed in society.
Euripides was often considered controversial and misogynist. But at the same time, he was one of the first tragedians to place women at the centre of myth and action, giving them complexity, agency, and intensity on stage. In that sense, The Bacchae can also be read as a radical shift in ancient Greek theatre.
The music I use, Secondo coro delle lavandaie by Roberto De Simone, comes from Neapolitan musical theatre (La Gatta Cenerentola, 1976). It is inspired by traditional songs and popular folk ritual culture. It feels like a collective voice—between theatre, rhythm, and purification. Almost like a tarantella, which is also connected to ritual dances and bacchanals: the body, voice, and group entering a shared state of intensity.
