The last weeks I worked on creating a (p)leather Hillgate baguette version. I had chosen pleather because the floral smocking detailing needs a weave to hold onto and I was worried genuine leather would snap.
You can find the Hillgate baguette pattern in the link in my bio.
Pattern notes:
- The pattern recommends the use of woven fabric (and I definitely stand behind that). However, the pleather fabric I used was a knit so it had some stretch to it. This was definitely challenging and required a lot of hand basting - it is possible but wouldn’t recommend it unless you are familiar with the material and pattern
- I also found the pleather was quite unforgiving for mistakes - because taking seams/stitches out leaves a little hole in the fabric. So make sure to work diligently with this material
- To stabilise the stretch pleather for the strap, I have used fusible interfacing on both sides of the strap
- I made the shoulder bag version but have shortened the strap by 10cm because I am planning to mainly wear this bag on my arm as a handbag and preferred a slightly shorter strap for that purpose
- Overall very happy with the result and think it is my favourite version of the Hillgate baguette so far!
