2016 was the year I got the keys to my first house on my own- the same house Iβve been in ever since.
This was where my kids and I moved after spending 5 months living in emergency transitional housing.
2016 was
- huge sudden relationship split and forced move (ty β€οΈ)
- serious concussion at work which knocked me out of work for two months
- a car accident four months later that reaggravated the head injury
- watching my beloved school get bulldozed and having to move schools on top of changing residences twice that year.
- massive mental health impacts while trying to raise two teens on my own.
Since then I have
- grown my hair from a pixie down to my waist (our hair= our strength!)
- stayed single! π
- earned my doctorate
- found my dream job
- became a foster mama
- travelled all over the world
- became a 6 star finisher after 12 years of chasing that dream!
- eliminated all of my toxic relationships and replaced them with the best friends I have ever had.
- worked on myself to make sure that Iβm not going to be the toxic one.
So as much as I was kinda grossed out at having to think back to 2016, considering I did not think I would actually survive 2016, that girl in these pictures would never have dreamed life couldβve turned out like this ten years down the road.

I followed that up with 15 easy kms on the treadmill as per my coaching plan. First, let me tell you what I love about these shoes..
Glycerin Max 2
Glycerin Max 1s have been the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned. The cushioning is out of this world! As someone who experiences chronic pain and neuropathy from arthritis and a spinal cord injury, I look for shoes that are both cushioned and ergonomic. I wore Glycerin Max for my speed workout last night and, with the springiness and energy return of these shoes, I routinely experience a much smoother run with way less wear and tear on my body. I canβt wait to try the Glycerin Max 2!
Cascadia 19GTX.
Currently, I run with Cascadia 18GTX for winter and mucky summer trail running. It is a stiffer shoe than the Caldera, but that is likely because it is made with Gore-Tex which keeps the shoe weatherproof in all sorts of conditions. I actually appreciate the stability of the stiffer shoe when running on unstable terrain, which makes the Cascadia GTX version my favourite winter running shoe, hands down! The grip on these shoes in the snow specifically is the best Iβve ever experienced! I canβt wait to try out the Cascadia 19 GTX this weekend!

Doing speed work in good olβ fashioned southern Ontario freezing rain didnβt sound fun or smart. I almost up-ended myself walking to the car at the gym haha π€£

Because I have a spinal cord injury I qualify under the βadaptive athlete programβ which has a 6 hour qualifying cutoff.
I qualified that year with a 4hr36β¦ thatβs running a full marathon with a very large cyst in my spinal cord that causes pins and needles and pain.
I remember being so excited and proud to toe the line in Hopkinton.
But each year they place us at the end of the first wave, so we get passed by a lot of very fast runners.
And I remember in 2021, within the first 5K, a male runner blowing past me in disgust, snapping at me
βDid you EVEN TRAIN?β
I wish this were an isolated experience.
Every year I run Boston Iβve had to answer to haters questioning my right to be there as a slower runner who doesnβt look disabled.
Itβs crazy the number of people who assume privilege of people theyβve never met and donβt know at all.
It sounds really simple but JUST BE KINDβ¦. you quite honestly have no idea what challenges people have faced to get to where they are.
As for me, I am STOKED!!
I have too many awesome blessings to look forward to this weekend without having to worry about proving my right to be in Boston yet another year. π«Άπ½πππ

My name is Robyn. Iβm turning 53 this month.
Iβm a 42x marathoner and became a Six Star finisher in March 2024.
I also have a spinal cord injury called syringomyelia. Itβs the existence of a very long cyst in my spinal cord that causes pain and pins and needles in my arms and legs.
My training looks a little different than most as there is a fine balance between running just enough to keep up my mental and physical health, and overtraining to exacerbate symptoms.
My chiropractor has saved my running career, as has letting go of time goals over the last couple of years. Despite being a slower marathoner, because of my SCI I have qualified and run Boston 3 times (#4 in April 2025) through their adaptive athlete program. I am so so grateful for this opportunity and will continue to run until I literally canβt anymore.
