For this month’s Pitti in Florence, Italy—one of the world’s largest menswear events—I created a custom garment for my Italian friend, Raffaele.

The piece is based on the traditional tailored jacket that originated in Britain.

Using vintage U.S. military duffel bags from the 1940s–1960s as the main material—many featuring stencils and handwritten signatures from soldiers—I reconstructed the jacket with patchwork panels made from various beautifully faded fabrics.

I’m excited to see this jacket showcased in Florence, Italy.

THE NEW YORK TIMES: BEHIND THE SCENES
Simbarashe Cha (NYT) // GEN (Re:Samp)

This season, a profound encounter took place with world-renowned visual journalist Simbarashe Cha.

GEN articulated the philosophy of Re:Samp—likening the process of deconstructing and reassembling military duffel bags to the syntax of hip-hop sampling—candidly during the New York Times interview. By demonstrating how the rhythmic sense acquired as a professional beatboxer translates into garment structural design, he emphasized the value of ”one-off garments.“

Music, philosophy, and a singular value.

A session that lasted over an hour amidst a heavy downpour. I express my deepest respect for the attitude and dedication toward journalism shown by him at the center of it all.

Nagi Suzuki // Critical bridge for this project.
As an interpreter, she perfectly connected the profound communion between Simbarashe Cha and GEN (Re:Samp).

RYU IJUN // Documented the Visuals and Editorial for this session.

Deep gratitude once again to the team: GEN (Re:Samp), Nagi Suzuki, and Simbarashe Cha for creating the best synergy as one team.

Simbarashe Cha (NYT) // GEN (Re:Samp)

Nagi Suzuki //

I was interviewed by The New York Times.
You can find the article link in my profile highlights.

When I attended Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo—Japan’s biggest fashion week—there were media from all over the world.

Simbarashe Cha,
who took my street snap, asked me,
“Which brand is that setup?”
When I told him, “I made everything myself,” he was surprised.

I also told him that I’m a professional beatboxer, and that my crew won a national championship in Japan. That surprised him even more.

Then he showed me a bit of beatboxing himself—
as expected from a New York Times journalist.

After that, I gave him my full beatbox performance,
and he was even more impressed.

“Do you have a minute? I’d love to interview you,” he said.

At that moment, I didn’t even know which media he was from—
later, I found out he was with The New York Times.

It was such a random and beautiful encounter.

In the interview, I spoke about my roots—
14 years of beatboxing, and the mindset I value when creating clothes.

Because of this unique background,
I truly believe I can create something that only I can make.

This experience reminded me of that again.

I’ll keep creating and sharing one-of-a-kind pieces with the world.

Thank you so much, Simbarashe Cha.
I truly appreciate it.

[Re:Samp x RYU IJUN]
Waxed ‘Origami’ Setup

■ GEN (Re:Samp)
━━ Founder of Re:Samp
A designer recognized by Vogue, GQ, WWD, and Complex. Expanded his orbit this season through a definitive interview with The New York Times.

■ RYU IJUN
━━ Creative Director
Defined the aesthetic blueprint for the ‘Origami’ setup and the strategic evolution of Re:Samp—crafting an outcome that transcends apparel to attain sculptural significance.

The Archive
6 vintage Barbour jackets were deconstructed to engineer a single, definitive piece. To achieve a profound, weighted tonality, the entire surface was meticulously re-waxed. A synthesis of vision and structural mastery. Rooted in the CWU-45/P archive, the design organically integrates a rider-jacket silhouette with vintage beige zippers—a contemporary suture of historical heritage.

‘Origami’
The extreme fragmentation of color-blocking mirrors the structural complexity of repetitive folds. By replacing snap buttons with concealed flap pockets, the purity of the silhouette is laid bare. The diagonal zipper traversing the torso ensures a sculptural presence from every vantage point.

Uncompromising craftsmanship meets a lucid vision. The inaugural entry in a new archive forged by Re:Samp and RYU IJUN.

■ RYU IJUN

The Archive

‘Origami’

I had the honor of having a brand POP created by Japanese collage artist Keigo Inamoto.

He is a highly respected artist who has worked on DVD and CD jackets for some of Japan’s top musicians.

He’s also a beatboxer — and a member of the same team as me.

For this piece, we incorporated authentic military bag fabric from the 1940s–60s.

We’ll be using this work at upcoming POP-UP events.

Thank you for this incredible masterpiece 🔥

【My Life Story】
.
.
■ Why I Became a Fashion Designer

I started making clothes independently in 2021.

Originally, I worked as a vintage clothing buyer, selling items online.
When I discovered upcycled clothing on Instagram,
it left a strong impression on me and made me want
to create and share garments like that myself.

There was no one around me who could make clothes,
so I decided to start creating on my own.

■ My Roots

I began human beatboxing in 2011,
and it completely changed my life.

At 16, I lacked confidence and felt I had no real strengths.
Beatboxing became the first thing that allowed me
to truly like myself.

I went on to build a career as a professional beatboxer,
performing at Universal Studios Japan
and becoming an official Japanese champion with my crew,
as well as winning multiple competitions.
I am still active today as a professional beatboxer.

Beatboxing is part of hip-hop culture,
and I have always been deeply inspired by the concept of sampling.

Sampling—extracting elements from the past and reconstructing them
into something new—shapes my creative philosophy.
Rather than creating from nothing,
I focus on transforming existing value into something greater.

■ About My Brand “Re:Samp”

Re:Samp stands for Re(created) + Samp(ling).

By sampling the textures and details of vintage and military garments,
I reinterpret and recreate them through my own perspective.

My work is not about replicas,
but about reconstructing garments into something unique and original.

The sense of sampling I developed through beatboxing
is directly translated into my clothing design process.

■ Highlights

Provided garments for Rafael Cavicchi
at Pitti Uomo 2026.

Featured in Vogue, GQ, Complex, WWD, NSS Magazine,
OTOKOMAE, and other international and Japanese media.

I currently handle everything on my own,
from design and production to sales.
