There’s something so effortless about a LBD. 🙌 This eyelet lace detailing is subtle and elegant and the shape is really comfortable and so flattering.

The neckline and capped sleeves of this polka dot dress 😍 it is tight fitting but the sleeves help balance out to help widen the hips and because the dress it tailored it helps accentuate the waist. Dress details are on my LTK Page gemmawhattowear
If you’re looking for a red dress over 50 that feels polished but not try-hard, this is such a good example. It works beautifully if you’re curvier because it highlights your waist, but it’s also lovely if you’re straighter through the body and want to create a bit more shape.

The little twist detail at the waist draws the eye in and creates definition, the V-neck is flattering without being too low, and the short sleeves are great if you prefer a bit of coverage on your upper arms. It sits below the knee, which makes it feel elegant but still relaxed and wearable.

It’s one of those dresses you could wear to lunch, on holiday, to a summer party, or even out for dinner. Add flat sandals for daytime, or a wedge or simple heel and a clutch in the evening and you’re done.

This is a relatively classic outfit built around a burgundy bag.

The bag was the starting point, because building an outfit around a key piece creates clarity from the beginning. Burgundy and pink work beautifully together, so once the colour combination was decided, the rest of the outfit became much easier to put together.

From there, you have options. A pink knit in the same tone as the coat would work, and so would a grey sweater. But because the argyle print is popular right now, choosing a knit that includes both colours helps tie the whole outfit together without adding anything extra.

If you wanted to keep the outfit fully classic, a straight-leg black jean would be the obvious choice. But a small change to the shape of the trousers — a cropped jean or even culottes, which are set to be a key shape in 2026 — updates the look without changing the outfit itself.

This is the approach I use to get more wear from what’s already in your wardrobe: start with a strong, classic base, then make small, thoughtful adjustments when you want the outfit to feel more current.

This outfit is one of the combinations I’ve shared in my Burgundy Bag Outfit Guide, where you’ll find more ways to build outfits around the pieces you already own.

Here are 4 easy outfit ideas using a red sweater, all built around pieces you probably already own. Changing the trousers, shoes or bag is often all it takes to make it feel new again.

If you’d like the exact links to the pieces in these outfits, you’ll find them on my LTK page (linked in my bio).

And if you want more outfit ideas like this, I’ve put together a Red Jumper outfit guide with simple, wearable combinations to take the guesswork out of getting dressed. It’s also linked in my bio.

You don’t need more clothes — just better combinations.
