What’s better than an adorable bear cub? How about three adorable bear cubs in a tree? These little ones were so tired after their climb that they settled down for a nap while mom grazed below. This sunrise image taken last spring of the Kimmitt homestead is the final photo I took of the famous southern Alberta landmark. Just a few weeks later it succumbed to the elements and collapsed during a windstorm. It’s sad that I can no longer see it on my travels to the area but I’m glad I was able to visit and photograph it over the years.

It was a mix of weather for the May long weekend here in southern Alberta. While some areas had sunshine, others were treated to a return of winter with a fair amount of snowfall. The changing conditions did provide some opportunities to catch a rainbow or two before another round of clouds rolled in.

One of the largest birds in Canada, the Pelicans have made their seasonal return to the waterways of southern Alberta. With a wingspan of over nine feet, it’s always fascinating to watch these amazing birds as they glide through the air. These two were pruning themselves in the warm glow of the evening sun and didn’t seem to mind an audience as I stopped to admire and snap a few photos.

One of my favorite abandoned places in Saskatchewan is the Wright homestead built in 1905. This grand old house has so many amazing period details and beautiful architecture. This photo was taken during a spring visit a few years ago and sadly the porch roof has since fallen, and the back wall of the home has caved in. I won’t be able to make the trip east this year, but fingers crossed it will still be standing when I am able to visit again in the years ahead.

After months of brown and grey, any pop of colour on the landscape is a welcomed sight. The prairie crocus is one of the first to return in the spring and they were out in full bloom across the hillsides this past weekend while on my first camping trip of the year. I can’t wait to see more wildflowers return in the weeks ahead.

I got to see my first fox kit of the year this week while on a drive in the evening after work. This one was braver than its siblings and came out for a short while before disappearing back into its den just before sunset. I know of five active den sites so far this year so I can’t wait to capture more of these adorable little ones in the weeks ahead.

I’ve come across many abandoned vehicles and farm equipment on my backroad travels over the years. They’re often placed as decor on the edge of a rural driveway or to mark the turn for out-of-town guests. I always enjoy spotting them like this old Chevrolet tucked into a grove of trees. There’s not much left of this old truck but it’s still charming nonetheless.

It’s always exciting to see the first signs of spring return to the landscape. The fresh, vibrant greens are a welcomed sight after months of white, grey and brown. We’re starting to see buds on the trees here in southern Alberta, so it won’t be long now before the landscape transforms once again.

It’s the time of year when bears emerge from their dens and if we’re lucky, get the chance to spot a newborn cub or two. It’s been a few years since this early spring encounter with a black bear and her two young cubs, but it remains one of my favorite experiences. Watching them nurse and nap under the watchful eye of their mom was a special moment and revisiting this memory makes me excited about what I might spot as I head out to explore in the upcoming weeks.
