🫐 The basics:
Blueberry canes (ie branches) are productive (ie produce fruit) for up to 4 years, with year 2-3 being most productive. This means that when you get a new blueberry plant, you probably don’t need to think about pruning it until it’s 4-5 years old.
The easiest way to prune is to remove a portion of old canes each year. This can be done by removing the oldest canes entirely, by cutting at the base of the plant.
Also, be sure to:
🫐 Cut tall (but still productive) canes down to a leaf bud, to encourage branching which means more fruit
🫐 Remove any dead, diseased, damaged or straggly growth
The best time to prune, is as soon as all fruit has been harvested (aka right now!) 💗
