It’s cold water swimming season, which has me thinking it’s a perfect time for some coastal New England fisherman style. Dropping a little breadcrumb trail to local legend & realest of the real (tippy top IG follow), trap fisher(wo)man.. for all the workwear nerds out there: Corey wears New Bedford made Guy Cotton bibs (still only made in a small shop in New Bedford & France), a German made bobble Mechanics hat from (Ralph alum),Heimat, to protect one’s noggin from low hanging doors & beams and our new, madder dyed Piscine smock & pomegranate & iron organic thermals made in collab with the genius botanical dye team when they were on the East Coast at the end of last year. This is far too much eye candy & workwear intel for a cheap instagram post, so I’ll see you in stories & hope you sign up for our infrequent newsletter at the link in bio for a non dystopian universe for dispatching work clothing intel…
Coming out of accidental IG retirement to pay some respect to the team of a vest proj that's been a year in the making... Feels incredible to piece together a regional production map for a proxy of Brown's Beach Cloth, first made in RI over 100 years ago. With big help from legendary weaver, Peggy Hart, we were able to turn 60 pounds of Dorset wool from the sheep at Peckham farm URI into our modern take on a Brown’s vest.

100% sure this story is too long for a IG (TLDR: nothing says slow fashion like pulling sheep poop + hay out of raw wool!) so pls click the link for more (& if you’ve missed out on a year’s worth of updates by counting on me posting here, be sure to sign up for our newsletter on our homepage!).

Locals, if you’re up for checking out new work in person, we’ll cranking the wood stove tomorrow, Fri the 3rd, 11-7 in conjunction with Tiverton’s bright night + opening of. Special guest appearances by (w/handmade linens) & (w/scented geranium, dahlia tubers, bulbs, dried flowers & sheepskins)! 3988 Main Rd Tiverton RI, xo!
A little tune to help us rewind back to high summer, when Willow Bergeron, an organic farmer & pastorialist, graciously jaunted from her perch at an equine barn in MA to my nursery/garden for a little socially distant photo-shoot & plant chat. The freshly shorn alpaca at our neighbor's farm (lol) helped capture the special soul of a dungaree that's been trialled in this garden for years. Picking up where our musings on femininity & Sargent last left off, our newest, eco-stonewashed, 13 oz black denim dungaree reminds us of the power of the perfect LBD. A hybrid of our best selling Sargent & Slim Slouch dungarees, it manages to hit all the right places with a comfortable, broken in feel... with apologies if your size is sold out at the moment (email subsc get first dibs!), we are so excited, at long last, to introduce the Madame X dungaree...
Fashion chicken greetings from a feral Luddite who forgot how to socialize in 2020! A couple exciting annoucements, ideally to show our gratitude & help you brighten someone's day 🌞. We know times are tough for so many & your incredible support enables & inspires us to give back. From now till Sun we will be offering free domestic & intl shipping & a discount on a handful of truly beloved pieces that make gorg, functional gifts. We've also stocked up the shop with small number of fatigue Deck sweaters (🎉!) & restocked our Tillie Capsule with more one-of-a-kind pieces, full of soul & purpose. Speaking of purpose, I'm most thrilled to tell you, in perpetuity, 💯% of the profits generated from our Tillie Capsule will be used to fund the work of organizations & individuals battling the interwoven, systemic problems plaguing our neighbors, friends, colleagues & loved ones: environmental justice, food access & the myth of meritocracy. Over the years, as we fundraised for these causes, we've seen firsthand that we can do a lot collectively, even at a small scale. We couldn't be more proud to put into motion one piece of a longer-term goal to demonstrate the beauty of doing more with less. Funds generated from our current capsule will go to Grow NYC!! Their A+++ work, since 1970, demonstrates you can do a lot for many, with very little. We love you, hardworking angles, & send our immeasurable gratitude for your overwhelming support, now & always.💐💗
Season of the Witch
The end of summer, nursing outrage fatigue, but still dreaming little dreams... Here's one: in 2008, I made a list of all the pieces I wanted hanging in my work wardrobe. Back then I couldn't find a single thing on that list--'utility' wasn't yet a trend (lol) & coveralls weren't the mainstay category of womenswear that they are today. Fast forward a few years & enter our very favorite collaborator: archivist at Dickies, street style guru, & all around lighthouse human being, Ann Richardson. I truly couldn't believe my luck when Ann let us play with a special, time tested pattern from the Dickie's archive as a point of departure for our coverall. Over the course of years (!), we made tweaks & considered construction decisions to that beloved pattern to allow for an incredible range of movement & to accommodate a wide range of women's bodies (recalling how flogging wet compost informed the raglan sleeve!). After a few years of falling in love with this piece, & with so many options purporting to solve a problem, we asked ourselves if we had something that was missing. All these years later, I can hardly believe I get to tell you why the answer is yes. Introducing the Miles Coverall...
There's a 'disciplinary' phrase I've heard over the years working in gardens & it goes like this: 'you can talk & work at the same time.' Nobody has ever said, 'you can listen & work at the same time' bc that is never a problem. It's funny bc it's true -- talking often takes your eye off the prize. It causes you to stop working. It causes you to get distracted & often distract others. Listening does not...
🌞
I often tell people that I think it is incredibly important to be a working person at the same time that I offer solutions to working people. I can't imagine designing/ making work clothing without working in gardens / the nursery. How could I understand the problems or pain points of this community without actually being a part of it? It's kind of curious to me that more people don't follow this logic when it comes to offering solutions re: anti-racist work--do we really understand the needs of the community we're trying to serve?
🕊️
I can tell you from my experiences working in gardens & making clothing that linear solutions rarely map onto the real world. I'm finding the same to be true as we find ourselves listening, learning & creating the best pathways for this small business to participate in anti-racist work for the long term. I'm really excited & encouraged by what we're working on, but the work is not yet to a point where it's ready to share. I can tell you there will be many pieces to our puzzle, some of which are public facing, some of which are best kept BTS. I hope we can keep our dialogue civil & cheerlead these positive changes as we fight for equity in ecosystems of all scales.
💐
I'm going to leave you with a biz update since you presumably follow along here for work clothing updates! We updated the shop with a bunch of restocks (Bill Workshirts, Quadro pants (in 28 in inseams!) & we are now offering a dungaree pre-order until Monday, midnight EST. Thank you all for your support & for tuning in here. I'll be thinking about you pulling weeds, literally & figuratively. Xx
A salty gram for everyone missing the sea #thecureforanything #soundon
Flower power fuel for tryna wrap my overstimulated brain around the wild reality of farmers having to compost/till-in/speed-freeze/store food while many food banks are running on E. There doesn't seem to be an easy/one size solution to connect these dots (& this makes some sense since it entails restructuring systems overnight, often at great cost). I know there are many farmers & other whip smart ppl following along here, so I'm wondering if I can mine this hive mind for some genius thoughts/ideas/ways we might be able to help farmers & help food banks get access to this food. Hoping by doin this here we can get as many people to jump in as poss. So tag away/ glide that paper airplane button (or just tap it)... & cuz I know you're gonna ask, that's Meconopsis 'Lingholm'--the elusive Himalayan Blue Poppy. Grazie mille! 🙏💐
