It was a great opportunity for students to really wrestle with technology and the creative process in this new era of technology. It's so valuable as a student to wrestle with challenging subjects while getting hands-on with technology so they can make your own fully vested opinions based off their own lived experiences.

They are discovering the potential and limitations of these AI technologies and seeing how much the human element still matters.
I saw some incredible work. Some students turned poems into visual art while others pushed their photography in brand new directions. It was inspiring to see them stay so aware of what it means to create and where the lines are between human and machine.
With my background as a concept artist, digital painter, game designer and animator, I have spent my career riding waves of technological change. It feels good to provide a safe harbor for students to experiment as they figure out their own way to ride these waves of change.

Mahalo to TRUE Initiative, TEKsystems, and the Central Pacific Bank Foundation for making this possible for students across Hawaii.
🧠 AI literacy is more important than ever. Drop shippers are making AI videos pretending to be from Hawaii in order to sell products that you can get on AliExpress and Temu 🛒.

If you see a video like this, here are the things to look for. First, they all suck at pronouncing Hawaiian words. None of the AI tools are all that great yet, though they are getting better.

And always look for consistency. Many video models aren't good enough yet to have the product that they're talking about fully match what's actually on their website. Unfortunately, there are tools that let you do that now, so look for work in progress or a good history of similarly created products

And if there's anything generated with any Google tools, you can check for a Synth ID watermark by uploading it to Google Gemini and the AI will tell you if it was AI generated or not.

As always, if you ever see something, say something. Send me any video you're suspicious of, and I'll let you know best as I can. If I think it was AI-generated or not. Let's work together to keep our family safe. And thanks for Hawaii news now for letting me sell some resin lamps on the news tonight.
Mahalo to the for having us this weekend. It was an honor to volunteer and share space with such driven students.

I had the chance to talk about my journey using AI to build my own consulting company. We dove into how students can leverage these same tools to build their own businesses and create their own opportunities right here in Hawaii.

Alexi also launched an upcoming high school entrepreneurship boot camp. It is a five-day program with free enrollment and food for any high schoolers in Hawaii.

Always love volunteering and seeing the next generation of innovators in action!

It was an honor and privilege to support our ‘ohana at Windward Community College during our recent deep-dive AI workshop. We explored practical ways to utilize AI for building tools and workflows, specifically focusing on the emerging practice of vibe coding to create custom applications.

As we navigate this technological shift, understanding and evaluating these tools is essential for the future of our local communities.

The Foundation of AI Literacy

AI literacy is the knowledge and skills that enable us to critically understand, evaluate, and use AI safely and ethically. It moves beyond just technical skill to include:

Understanding: Knowing what AI is and how models are trained on large collections of text, research datasets, and through data centers.

Evaluating: Recognizing the helpful aspects of AI while remaining vigilant about environmental effects, deepfakes, and inherent biases.

Safe and Ethical Use. Ensuring work remains our own, being transparent about AI assistance, and keeping personal information private.

AI as a Multiplier for Our Community

AI acts as a multiplier of our collected knowledge and lived experience. When applied thoughtfully, it allows us to:

Rapidly Prototype Solutions: Using "vibe coding" to build apps and websites!
Scale Local Innovation: Leveraging tools like Google Gemini, NotebookLM, and AI Studio to transform chaotic inputs into actionable strategic plans and community problem statements.
Maintain Human Agency: Treating AI as a "very smart intern" that requires human validation ensures that the final output remains grounded in our local values and standards.
The goal is to prepare for the future workforce by becoming that workforce today. By building our collective understanding, we ensure these technologies are used as forces for good throughout Hawai‘i. I am incredibly excited for what is coming as we continue to learn, play, and build together.
Ai literacy for everyone in our community so that we can do the good work that we do better faster and have a larger impact on our community.

That was the theme for today's talk and workshop. Excited to see how these honor students put AI to work to improve our communities.
