Who’s next?
We continue revealing the line-up, which from June 18–23 will activate Logroño through a new series of public space interventions.

In 2026, we begin a new collaboration with Nieuwe Instituut, the Netherlands’ national museum for architecture, design and digital culture, addressing key societal challenges such as housing, the climate crisis and the impact of technology.

Within this framework, Nieuwe Instituut contributes to the edition with a special presentation of Multiform by Gabriel Fontana. Building on their collaboration at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, curator Amanda Pinatih and Fontana have developed a new activation of the game that explores alternative fields of play in collaboration with local schools and their students.

The project is supported by Embassy of the Netherlands in Madrid.
ABOUT: ESSAYS //

Sport, far from being neutral, is a designed system that shapes cultural and ethnic identities, bodies, and social relations. Fields, stadiums, uniforms, and objects codify hierarchies, gender, and class, reinforcing binaries and inequalities while imposing normative models of behavior and belonging. Reading sport as social architecture means uncovering its ideological underpinnings, but also its potential: rules and spaces can be reimagined to make competitions fluid, inclusive, and open to new forms of relation and collective imagination.

3. Studio Gabriel Fontana, Multiform (2019). In the locker room, the transformable jerseys create an intermediate moment between identification and play. The act of putting on the uniform is no longer neutral: it becomes a gesture that activates new relational configurations and questions the stability of predefined roles.

Multiform has officially been acquired by MoMA for its permanent Design & Architecture collection — becoming the first queer sport to enter a major museum collection. It still feels so surreal to write this.

I’m still processing what this means. For me, it marks an exciting shift in design itself — moving beyond producing objects toward shaping social relations.

Feeling extremely grateful to, my fairy godmother, who has supported me over the past few years. 🤍🏁

Also thinking of my peers from, where it all started 8 years ago, before being brought to life in Rotterdam through workshops with local schools; collaborations with sports philosopher Nathanja van de Hevel; and the women of, who have been (and still are) producing these crazy outfits. From there, Multiform kept travelling — finding its way into various communities around the world.

Three months in Los Angeles with — what a ride. From capitalist sports spectacles to community trans wrestling events, from queer archives at ONE to Venice Beach roller dancers, LA always turned sport into a show. Also, what a time to be in the US...

Already missing my LA faeries folks 🧚‍♀️💖
One year later, I'm looking back at the 1st edition of Tournament of the Unknown, which took place over a month at W139 Amsterdam. The tournament used sport as a bridge within and between communities, offering a place to meet, test and rehearse alternative modes of being together.

I remain immensely grateful to everyone who participated in this project, from the incredible team at W139 to all the participating artists, designers and collectives.

The upcoming edition of Tournament of the Unknown will be co-created this spring, in collaboration with secondary schools in Seine-et-Marne, along with French queer artists and collectives. It'll be presented at near Paris in June. Stay tuned!
New exhibition coming next month!

"Since the 1990s, following the 'social turn' in art, collaborative practices have gained prominence in contemporary creation, challenging the romantic notion of the solitary artist working alone in their studio.

The exhibition 𝙌𝙪𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙨 explores the connections between art and society, showcasing diverse social practices that celebrate collectivity, civic engagement, and activism."

"Through a queer-feminist framework, the publication investigates the ideologies and biases that have been historically embedded and reproduced by the design of sport (uniforms, objects, architectures, sport fields, etc). Gabriel’s work challenges the dominant discourse of using design within sports only as an aesthetic tool to improve existing athletic oriented objects. He invites us to move towards using design to radically rethink its fundamental role from a social perspective and reimagine the values we want to promote both on and off the sports field."
