Arriving at Huntington, the lake conditions were as mild as the breeze, & the water a sheet of glass. It was absolutely gorgeous morning & I was grateful to be part of it, despite the lack of epic light. Regretfully walking up the stairs to head to work, a voice yelled out - “did you see the baby raccoon?” Jae led me to a cottonwood & pointed to about spot 50-ft up. As I focused a blind eye on the branch she indicated THIS came into focus. What an incredibly adorable scene - and one that I’d nearly walked past, and skipped out all together.
Life is just better when we all work together.
It’s well-documented that pollinators and honeybees specifically are in serious decline. I haven’t come across one of these swarms in years. Now more than ever, it’s uplifting to see a sight like this!
Would love to run this again & document all the scenery, great signage, & awesome aid & cheer stations along the way!
1. Did you know we have wild spiny lizards in Ohio? Check out the color & detail in this handsome male Eastern Fence Lizard.
2. This Agreeable Tiger Moth looks everything but upon closer inspection - full of sass & punk rock energy.
3. This is a Swainson’s Warbler – the rarest regularly-occurring warbler in Ohio. Three frames were combined to create this action sh*t.
4. Check out that camouflage…nature is unreal! Female Eastern Fence Lizard.
5. Hebrew aka ‘Frankenstein’ Moth. The proper name likens its markings to characters in the Hebrew alphabet, but our informal nickname, well…once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
6. Northern Black Racer – fast, aggressive, but not the venomous snakes we hoped for.
7. There is no cooler moth that the Luna – we held our breath as this beauty cruised around our “mothing station.”

Prior to yesterday, only 14 meteorites had been found in Ohio ALL-TIME!
Aurora Borealis over Headlands Beach State Park, Ohio. Ten toes in the Ohio sand, with a sky straight from the Arctic. The Northern Lights danced overhead last night for HOURS. So wonderful to see the power of social media working for good, as tons of people were able to witness this generational phenomenon. How will we ever top the past couple months??
