In all my years visiting Cape Town, Iāve always wanted to see the townships to better understand the city, but the fear weāre fed kept pushing it off. And while my fear isnāt entirely unfounded, with high rates of crime and sexual violence, it was clear that as a solo female tourist, going without a local isnāt recommended.
But the resort lifestyle you see from Cape Town on social media, is on the side of the city that was deemed whites only during the Apartheid. There is a major disparity of wealth in the city and the true essence of the city is where people need the most help.
And while some parts of the townships are run by gangs, there are SO many parts to them that are safe and full of life. When people say their best party was when a local took them to a favela in Brazil or a comuna in Colombia, itās because thatās where a countryās true soul lives. And the very same can be said about Cape Townās townships.
So whether itās your first time coming to Cape Town or youāre a season returner, donāt make the same mistake I did and wait to visit a township. Whether itās a Sunday night out Rands, a braai with locals or helping with local charities, get outside of the Cape Town you know. And get to know the people living there on an intimate level.
Special thanks to Neliswa Nkwali helping me identify the families in need and to everyone who donated to me! We were able to provide 2 months of food for 12 families. Please show some support to her foundation,, now up and running. They focus on social development for children in Khayelitsha š«¶
Black hair is so much more than just hair to us, itās not based on style or trend. Itās tied to meaningful cultural roots that stem from a black identity which unfortunately sometimes derives from discrimination.
Natural Afro hair is still seen as wildly unkempt or unprofessional in white society. To this day, some workplaces and schools in the U.S. still ban natural hairstyles and braids, all in the name of āuniform standardsā. Subsequently, I would straighten my hair to fit the social norms of my peers. Even getting braids for the first time scared me, because I was afraid Iād be perceived as āghettoā.
Coming to Cape Town and seeing so many other women with my hairstyle brings a source of comfort that I havenāt experienced elsewhere. And better yet, itās celebrated.
So cheers to me and my curlsā¦and a reminder that black is beautiful! And thank you for being the most incredible hairstylist through my hair journey here in Cape Town!
And I know to majority of people we speak to who havenāt beenā¦our obsession with this city almost sounds like we are part of some sort of cult. š
But a major part of the draw here is community. Everyone here wants to connect. And with that, people are always finding and building ways to create community. And in whatever niche that suits youā¦youāll find it.
This event for example, was put together by a which gives people the opportunity to live in luxury villas such as this, and also offer a range of curated experiences tailored to the tastes of those living in the same space as you. And to showcase the villas they work with, they threw a white party sundowner that I broke my āno parties till AfrikaBurnā forā¦because letās be honest, this villa was worth it. š
Which in truth is my favorite reason to come to this city š

And if you want to book a private long tail boat thatās comfortable and try booking onlineā¦youāll likely get ripped off. I know because, I was getting quoted 12k to 20k baht for the same boats I got with for 4k for a 5 hour tour. She was incredibly accommodating and the captain was so chill. Highly recommend booking through Nana if youāre keen for this boat day!
Boat day stops:
- James Bond Island
- Pantene Island (floating village)
- Lod Cave
- Hong Island
- Panak Island
But the view of Phanga Bay is 1.5 hours from Phuket and I now only had 10 minutes left on the drive (on a gravel road) before I reached this viewā¦.
So the only alternative? Have graciously drive both myself and on the back of his bike, all the way up. But of course 10 minutes after reaching the top, the sky starts to turn grey. š§ļø
Just as Jacob gets to the bottom and we find shelter, it starts pouring rain. We try and wait it out, but now itās nightfall. So naturally we decide to ditch the bikes (for now) and call a grabā¦but of course none are available in the area. We then finally get an accepted ride using indrive instead, and the driver starts trying to negotiate a higher price in the app or threatens to cancel.
We concede to his price and finally get home, knowing tomorrow Iād be returning my bike and getting scammed for the cost of repairs (which I definitely did).
And that, my friends, pretty much checks every box for the most stereotypical Thailand travel story ever. š¹š

The Local Cave House Hotel in November was only 150 USD a night for a suite that sleeps three people. Itās also one the few hotels in Cappadocia that even has a poolā¦and theirs is heated unlike the others. Swipe right for the night view š

Make sure you have cash to tip these gals, but be warnedā¦youāll never have āenoughā and they will harass you about it each time they see you again. But the pics are worth it š
