Too bold to call this the platonic ideal of a tracksuit? The kind equally fitting for jaunt to the Spurstowe Arms for smoked mozzarella focaccia and a swift pint as it is patrolling the touchline with eleven of your most-hungover mates gasping and gamboling around the pitch as you bark futile instruction, like Maurizio Sarri if he scrubbed up really, really well, shielded from the elements, as you are, by a 90s-inspired Olmatex shell — water resistant Italian fabric, constructed by loving Lithuanian machinery — with matching jackets and pants somehow unblemished by the roiling mudbath around you? Maybe, but can we not knock it? Take a pew at the van near the changing room doling out magma masquerading as brew to check the details now: the magic’s to be found in that classic knitted taping running along shoulder, down the arms and legs, the handdrawn illustration speaking to antique texts & British wildflower illustrations, redolent of ancient pagan ritual and mythology, and even — if you listen carefully — a reminder to pick up a new cafetiere on the way home after you accidentally cracked yours and maybe even a bunch of peonies by way of apology for absconding from the scene to make it in time kick-off. “Sorry about that,” you text. “Three points, though.”
It makes for a really nice outfit, is what we’re saying. Jacket can be worn as a statement or as part of a standout two-piece. Up to you, really.

“Margate is a town where the edges blur in the best possible way,” he told us. “Between locals and newcomers, between work and leisure, between the desire to escape and the urge to belong…”
Staying true to those instincts, he’s curated a new art show at Quench gallery, called Brexciya — a reference to the afrofuturist city of Drexciya (a mythical Black Atlantis at the bottom of the ocean) combined with the UK’s mucky excision from the continent (you might have heard about it) that saw towns like Margate become a political frontline.
A group exhibition “exploring memory, migration, and the possibilities of joy as a form of resistance and resistance as joy,” Rudi admits his curation necessarily draws from his perspective as the Black, queer, son of immigrants. But while Brexciya has no direct reference to football, he describes his relationship to the game with a gravity recognisable to any who have turned to sport as a way to connect:
From formative memories of trips with his granddad to Portsmouth’s Fratton Park — The particulars of the game dissolve, replaced by a young boy’s somatic reaction to the surrounding intensity, etched into his memories like the volcanic tea pooling in the polystyrene cup between his small hands — to today, football has become a framework for his new life on the coast, hung around regularly five-a-side matches organised in a WhatsApp group poignantly named ‘Low Expectations’.
“Margate’s football scene feels like a microcosm of the town itself,” he says. “And over the past two years, I’ve really fallen in love with football again, for sure.”
Brexciya runs at Margate’s Quench gallery until December 21 2025

𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘐 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺: I really hate when people who play football call it “therapy” as those people normally also get straight reds and fight strangers. But to be fully honest, I’m at my happiest, most relaxed, and creative right after having played with my friends first thing in the morning or on a weekend afternoon.
𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘵-𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘴 & 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥: My favorite football pub is Soccer Tavern in South Brooklyn. It’s distinctly Chinese and Irish, the only place where you can watch obscure pro footy games while lads also bet big on Mahjong. Insane vibe. A special shout out for the Taco truck by McCarren Park. It’s truly unrivaled after mens league games - get the California burrito with fries in it.
𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳: Hipster pick from me but gonna go with Eze. Then the only CB who is also a GK and will dribble you out of your boots
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘯 𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩: My friend Nico scored multiple bicycle kicks on one of those tiny, semi-circle, pick up goals. Madness.
