Friends of the Chicago River is proud to stand in solidarity as one of more than 70 organizations calling on Chicago to move the Hazel M. Johnson Cumulative Impacts Ordinance forward. This long overdue ordinance is the result of decades of grassroots organizing led by frontline communities fighting for clean air, clean water, and healthier neighborhoods. Too many communities along the South Branch, the Calumet River, and the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal continue to bear the cumulative impacts of polluting land-use decisions generation after generation. Tell your alderperson you support this important policy at the link in our bio.
This week, Friends’ Director of Equity and Engagement Becky Lyons joined and International Coastal Cleanup in DC to meet with Members of Congress about the importance of the NOAA Marine Debris Program and reducing plastic pollution at the source.

Anyone who has joined a litter cleanup with Friends has seen their fair share of foam containers, plastic bottles, bags, and other waste polluting our waterways, so we’re here to tell our elected officials about the urgent need to stop plastic pollution from reaching our rivers, lakes, and streams. From the Chicago-Calumet River system to coastlines across the country, communities are demanding action on the growing plastic crisis. Cleaner waterways start with stronger upstream solutions.
Microplastics are now a nearly invisible constant throughout Illinois’ waterways. A new report from found microplastics everywhere from Skokie Lagoons and Goose Island to Bubbly Creek and the Calumet River, reinforcing what our research partner Dr. Tim Hoellein has documented for years. If you’re a fish in the Chicago-Calumet River system, there’s a nine in 10 chance you have plastic in your body.

Thank you to Environment Illinois for helping shine a light on the growing microplastics crisis and the urgent need for stronger plastic reduction policies, public education, and collective action. Photo Credit: Environment Illinois
🚨STOP THE NURDLES🚨 House Bill 4418 to enact stronger controls targeting plastic pellets (aka nurdles) will be heard before the Illinois Senate Environment Committee on Thursday morning. These tiny plastic pellets are used to make most plastic products, and they are often spilled or end up in drains, making their way into the Chicago-Calumet River system and other waterways where they absorb toxic chemicals and are mistaken for food by fish and birds. ‼️ Please take a moment to file a witness slip in support of HB 4418. Link in bio for the witness slip and instructions.
Audio and photo documentation from Chicago River Day spent recording along the confluence of the North Branch of the Chicago River and North Shore Channel while learning more about the Sounds of the River Sample Pack Project with Cesar Trish and Somer

I’m not usually making beats, but I loved the idea of contributing field recordings and environmental sounds as a way of collaborating across different practices and approaches to sound. The audio in this clip comes from a single simultaneous recording using a mix of different microphones. I had an Audio-Technica BP4025 stereo microphone rigged to my Zoom F8n Pro mixer alongside a JrF d-series + hydrophone and two LOM Geofons.

The first section of audio is an XY stereo recording from the BP4025 microphone facing the confluence point of the river, and the second section was recorded using a JrF d-series + hydrophone made by lowered directly into the river between a few rocks.

The third section is audio from the geofon’s attached to a metal fishing platform, recording vibrations moving through the structure and the resonance of the river itself (North Branch of the Chicago River). The ending combines all of the recordings together, and listening to the different frequencies interact created some curious harmonies and exchanges.

Spending time listening to and documenting various parts of the Chicago River has been an interesting way to get to know the Midwest. It’s become a way of learning more about the layered histories, ecologies, infrastructure, and relationships connected to the river, while paying closer attention to the built and natural environments around it.

Happy Chicago River Day from the River Park Community Hub! Volunteers and community members came out to engage with tabling partner organizations, canoe on the North Branch, and remove harmful litter from the park areas! Thank you to all who joined Friends across the watershed for our largest annual volunteer event ☀️🌿
The Chicago River Swim represents a culmination of the hard work, passion, and dedication of the Chicagoans who fought to clean up and revitalize our river. Reclaiming our river not only creates a recreational space for residents and visitors, but puts us on the map with other global destinations where open-water swims have become part of city culture.
Holy beautiful beaver Batman! Thank you to for sharing with us this very cool video of a beaver chilling on the riverbank near Clark Park. Rare to get daytime footage since beavers are generally nocturnal animals. We love seeing your wildlife spottings!
