Since the late 19th century, workers, local clubs and Sunday league teams have met here. At its peak, more than 100 games were said to take place here on a single weekend. There are fewer today, but still every Sunday plenty of players still show up, turning the open plain into a patchwork of pitches.
No matter the weather, or the effects of a Saturday night out, they come to compete and give it all. Many do not train during the week, they just turn up on a Sunday and keep one of London’s oldest football traditions alive.
I am looking forward to seeing his image displayed alongside so many other fantastic works on screens across the country. The exhibition runs from today until 8th February. If you spot Ayden’s portrait on any screens over the coming months, let me know 🙏

Fahma and her friends were having a picnic in a park in Haggerston to celebrate Eid. She kindly allowed me to photograph her in the beautiful evening sun and told me that she was originally from East Africa.
This image is from my ongoing series Hackney Colours, which is a lyrical exploration of my neighbourhood to capture its essence and to celebrate difference and the people of this borough. I depict mundane moments of daily life around me, fleeting encounters and Hackney’s ever-changing landscape, attempting preserve a moment in time as gentrification steadily sanitises the eccentricity and rawness that once defined this area of London.
