I would like to close this celebration with a shot I really love. Not only because I love how it turned out, with such a wonderful light during a sunset by the ocean, but also because the lady in the picture and her family are very dear to me, and I was honored to take her picture.
The Navajo Nation has been one of the very first Native American nations I heard about when I was a kid, and this is also making this shot special to me. Caitlin is wearing a traditional Diné (Navajo) outfit, and like almost everything connected to the Native culture features symbols and represents something, what you see in this pic has a lot to tell.
The dress and the rug blanket are made of sheep wool; being Navajos incredible weavers that was the traditional way to wear. The symbols represent the universe, the sacred mountains, the rainbow. The sash, or sis Å‚ichÃi’ represents the female rain with its fringes, or the sacred menstrual cycle. The kélchà are the plain mocassins, with the sole representing the sky and the upper part Mother Earth. The beautiful turquoise necklace, the yoo’, represents the life cycle, starting from the birth, at top right, down and up again to the left, to the old age. In the center, the semicircular part of the jewelry represents the umbilical cord and the connection to the mother. Her hair is tied in a tsiiyééł, the Diné traditional bun, thanks to strings of white yarn, the tsii’ tł’óół. Hair is very important in the Native American tradition, and represents the wisdom, the knowledge, and that’s why it's a blessing to have long hair. Folding it in a bun like that means to keep all your knowledge and wisdom tied close to your head. The hair represents also the rain and the yarn strings represent sunbeams. Caitlin is also holding a basket, a ceremonial or wedding basket inside which are gifts with which she’s making an offering to the ocean. The basket is woven with symbols again representing the sacred mountains and the flow of life, through different moments, good and bad, represented by different colors white and black.
