“Disguised portrait of the Pink Panther’s fiancé, with which I won the 5th costume competition hosted by Leopoldo Montgomery at his home in Coconut Grove. In the portrait, I am shown awaiting the verdict on the appeal filed by Ophelia Palomo, who challenged the result, claiming she had spent $4,500 on a natural Remy hair wig and would have to pay for it with the prize money. I paid for her wig at Louies’ Wigs Boutique.” Frasquito Raymond-Gil. Coral Gables. Miami.

Frasquito.

From my series “Flowers,” with a thought.
“To have a flower up your ass” is associated with being incredibly lucky, an inherently comical and contradictory idea, since a flower in that location is hardly practical. There are also more subtle proverbs like “March flower, doesn’t break the cart,” which suggests that something seemingly fragile can be resilient, or the saying “Painted flowers, don’t smell of anything,” which warns about how artificial beauty or appearances are deceiving, showing the lamb of God that what is beautiful is not always valuable. Linking this to proverbs about beauty, in their cruder versions, “Better a rich ugly man than a poor handsome man,” which shows how economic utility trumps aesthetics, or “Better a wise and ugly man than a handsome and foolish man,” which are falsehoods since society, like nature, craves external beauty to attract, like flowers, supermodels, or the golden poison dart frog.
