Conner, an undergraduate with a double major in ecology and biology, will participate in this summer’s Coastal Study Away Program. The scholarship provides experiential learning opportunities for students to travel to Georgia’s coast to study turtle migration, restore oyster reefs and understand how cultural heritage and environmental health are deeply intertwined.
The scholarship was created in remembrance of Birkley Heyen (AB ’24), who poured his heart into caring for people and the planet. A student of UGA’s Odum School of Ecology and Office of Sustainability, Birkley was just months from graduating when his life was cut short in March 2024. In his 20 years, he built strong communities and believed deeply in the interconnectedness of all living things—from turtles to salt marshes, from oysters to coastal traditions.
Ph.D. candidate Justin Scherer in UGA’s Franklin College of Arts and Sciences studies how genetic mutations form and spread in maize.
His research shows that different parts of a plant accumulate mutations in different ways and that plant structure plays a role in what gets passed on.
The goal is to better understand plant growth and support stronger, more resilient crops.
Graduating this week, Scherer plans to continue work in plant genetics focused on food security and sustainable agriculture. Read more about his journey:

Robert Schmitz and Gerald Hart are recognized for research that advances understanding of gene regulation, plant biology, and human health.
Election to the NAS is one of the highest honors in science, awarded through a selective, peer-reviewed process. Franklin now has 13 faculty members, past and present, elected to the academy. Congratulations to Prof. Hart and Prof. Schmitz!
