Grand Lake sits at the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, a quieter corner of the park during winter. With Trail Ridge Road closed, access is limited on this side, but when RMNP turns into a snow globe, itās especially beautiful. The Never Summer Mountains stretch across this section of the park: a vast, rugged range that, true to their name, usually sees plenty of snow. (Key word⦠usually, you know, during normal Colorado winters)
If youāve never experienced Grand Lake in winter, add it to your winter wish list. Keep an eye on the forecast, time it with a snowfall, and get out there to see it for yourselfā¦
Snow transforms everything here. Higher elevations like Logan Pass can see upwards of 30 feet of snow in a single winter, reshaping the park into something almost unrecognizable. While access is limited to smaller pockets of the park during this season, what is reachable still delivers exceptional views: frozen lakes, snow-covered peaks, and a sense of solitude thatās hard to find in National Parks during any other time of year.

Thereās something uniquely special about this place. For starters, it isnāt easy to get to, which naturally keeps some visitors and tourists at bay (no pun intended). And while itās unbelievably beautiful in winter, it also delivers some of the harshest weather you can imagine. Bundle up buttercup⦠this adventure doesnāt come easy.
The Lofoten Islands, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, are a wild mix of jagged alpine peaks, quiet fishing villages, white-sand beaches, and dramatic fjords; all packed into a relatively small archipelago. In winter, the landscape feels raw and untouched, with snow-covered mountains plunging straight into the sea, long nights, polar light, and the chance to witness the Northern Lights dancing overhead.
Unlike Iceland, Lofoten feels far less crowded and touristy, offering a more remote and intimate experience with nature. Stretching roughly 175 miles long, these islands prove just how much diversity and beauty can exist in one rugged corner of the world⦠I dream of going back here someday⦠to visit again during wintertime but also summer as well for some hiking. š Lofoten Islands, Norway š³š“ shot on with Sony Zeiss lenses
One of the coolest moments last year was finally holding a copy of the National Geographic book ā100 Runs of a Lifetimeā with one of my images published inside. Iāll write a longer post about it someday, but getting that book in my hands was an extremely gratifying, full-circle moment.
Partnering with fellow creators (a couple seen in this post) pushed me to learn more, grow faster, and produce better work. You can do great things solo⦠but when like-minded creatives come together, the ceiling gets higher. Collaborating more with other creatives is a big focus for me in 2026.
A major life lesson: thereās more to life than working all the time. I rediscovered my love for photography only after putting it down for long stretches. Stepping away from the hustle mentality helped me avoid burnout and fall back in love with the craft instead of forcing it.
I also did several things that made me feel uncomfortable, out of place, and like a beginner again; which is where the real growth happens. Joining a CrossFit gym was humbling in the best way. Taking a Wilderness First Responder course scared the sh*t out of me, but I learned a ton and fell in love with the process. Learning to film myself and start YouTube? Awkward, uncomfortable and incredibly valuable. Do the thing that scares you. Thatās where growth lives.
Iāve also leaned into gratitude for being a (somewhat) successful creative. Saying ānoā to underpaid or misaligned gigs in 2025 felt true to my integrity and it led to better partners and higher-paying work that actually aligned with my vision.
One last lesson: creatives are often their own harshest critics. You still need to be your biggest cheerleader. Celebrate your wins; it goes further than you think.
Meditation and journaling continue to ground me. Iāve logged 456 consecutive days of meditation over the past two years, and itās helped quiet the noise, sleep better, and show up more present every day.
Hereās to doing more of what matters in 2026...
Iāve experienced over 15 winter seasons here, powder days and deep snowpack feel like part of our identity ā¦the rocky mountains buried in white, the rivers full in spring, the backcountry waiting under blankets of cold. But this year has been different.
Across much of the state, snowpack has been tracking well below average. After a drier-than-normal April and early melt,
Coloradoās statewide snowpack dropped to roughly 57% of the median for this time of year ā¦far below what weād expect this time of year. Southern and southwest basins like the San Juan and Upper Rio Grande are especially low compared to historic norms.
Even though winter storms still bring snow to higher elevations and fresh powder here and there, the depth and persistence of snow this season tell a story of a landscape thatās not stacking up the way it used to. So while the snowy mountain views and ski days still come, the bigger picture in 2025 is a reminder that Coloradoās winters are shifting
Winter may still be here⦠but the snow story has changed. Hereās to chasing it wherever and whenever it still shows up. āļø
I think change takes risk⦠change takes willingness⦠change means taking chances. Some of those changes will pay off, and most likely most will not. But how do we keep progressing if all we do is the same thing, on repeat?
I did a lot self reflecting this summer and fall; many times deciding if putting the camera down altogether might be the next best thing for me. And one day⦠it hit me, something has to change. I spent a lot of time researching, watching content about āfeeling lost as a creativeā¦ā helping give myself grace about feeling lost. Directionless. Different than burned out⦠Iāve been there before⦠this was more a feeling of āWell, where do I want to take this thing next?ā..it took me back to a conversation I had with my Dad when he basically said to me āSpontellis never quitā¦ā
This next phase of growth will be more intentional, more thought out, more calculated⦠a willingness to say āNoā to money making and āYesā to risk, chance and seeking the unknown. For it is in these moments that we grow the mostā¦. Coming soon, Iāll have a full breakdown on YouTube, and maybe itāll help you see why feeling lost isnāt a setback⦠itās a signal. You will find your way.
It wasnāt easy to articulate, but I hope it speaks to anyone whoās been drifting and trying to figure out what ānextā looks like. #Feelinglost #coloradolife captured on Siii
As a creator, Iāve had to get creative when it comes to sharing horizontal images, splitting them into carousels, reframing compositions, trying to make wide perspectives work on a vertical-first platform. But it feels like the right time to experiment again⦠to mix formats, to post what feels true, and to let Coloradoās landscapes breathe in the way they deserve. Wide scenes belong wide. 1. Understand the Value of Your Work š”: Your images have a life beyond the initial shoot. Whether theyāre used in a global ad campaign, printed in magazines, or shared across social media, the value of your work increases with every use. Licensing ensures you get paid each time your image is usedāthink of it as ongoing revenue for your creativity.
2. Misunderstanding Licensing Rights š«: Licensing isnāt just about selling an image; itās about controlling how itās used. How long will the image be used? In what geographical regions? For what purpose? Without proper licensing, you might unknowingly allow your work to be used in ways you didnāt intendāwithout getting paid for it.
3. Donāt Leave Money on the Table šø: When you charge only for the shoot, youāre potentially losing out on significant earnings. Imagine your image being featured in a national campaign for years, and you only received a one-time fee. Proper licensing fees reflect the true value of your work and ensure youāre compensated fairly over time.
4. Protect Your Intellectual Property š”ļø: Without clear licensing agreements, you lose control over how your images are used. This can lead to misuse or unauthorized reproduction, which not only diminishes the value of your work but can also harm your reputation as an artist.
5. Educate Yourself and Your Clients š: Knowledge is power. Understanding licensing and educating your clients about its importance helps ensure that both parties respect the value of creative work. A well-informed client will appreciate the investment in high-quality, licensed imagery, leading to a better partnership. Cont. in comments, my blog and storiesā¦
Call it luck, call it fortune but recently I was reached out to by none other than to license an image for an upcoming book they are releasing. They didnāt find me through Instagram, a place where so many photographers spend their time marketing themselves, hoping for a chance to be seen. They DID find me because of the time I spent writing blogs about our hiking and backpacking trips, and by teaching myself some SEO skills they discovered my work through my website. My blog has presented me with dozens of opportunities that I would have never imagined... to be honest, most of the times I write and publish I am just hoping that someone will stumble upon it and find it inspirational to get outside and send it on an adventure like ours. The image they selected was from a backpacking post I wrote in October 2020 covering our experience of hiking to Conundrum Hot Springs, in the Aspen-Snowmass Wilderness. Have you been?! Itās an incredible experience... Iāll throw the write-up on my stories so you can check it out.
Be curious, try different things, and never underestimate the power of your website to be seen and discovered. #blogger #trailchat #hikingblog #backpacking #natgeo
