The Mughal painting is by Abul Hasan, ‘the wonder of the age’, who was just 14 or 15 when he made it. The Mughal emperors were fascinated by prints of European renaissance art and asked their court painters to emulate them. The Hindu work is very different – vivid and stylized, with humanoid monkeys and an almost cartoonish immediacy.
Both works will be on display at Frieze Masters 2025. They reveal the reciprocal influence of Eastern and Western art, a key theme that runs throughout the fair.

We shall exhibit some of the works on our stand (G5) at Frieze Masters from 15 to 19 October. We hope to see you there.

A luxurious painting of an Imaginary Flower (North Deccan, Aurangabad, dated 1669, once part of a manuscript made for Raja Jaswant Singh I of Jodhpur) enchants with the stark abstraction of the plant and the contrast of vibrant colours against a shimmering gold background.
A highly detailed and naturalistic depiction by the Master of the Fine Albums (Calcutta, c.1800) shows the Toon ciliata (Indian Mahogany Flowering Tree). This painting is one of a group of exceptionally fine botanical drawings made by unidentified artists for British patrons living in the Calcutta area in the early 19th century.
Both paintings are discussed in our online catalogue, see link in bio.

Another aspect of Mughal painting currently under study is the loose paintings with inscriptions and ownership seals on the verso, made by the imperial librarians. This information sometimes tells a fascinating story about the history of a painting, as is the case with our A Farrier Shoeing a Royal Horse, attributed to Mukhlis, c. 1585. The painting belonged to Asaf Khan (brother of the Empress Nur Jahan and father of Mumtaz Mahal) during his lifetime, but was returned to the Imperial Library upon his death in 1641.
These two paintings, along with our other AWNY paintings, are discussed in our online catalogue, see link in bio.
We hope to see you in NY in March.

The curation was exquisite and there was perfect balance between the contemporary and the historical. On show were important and surprising loans, many previously unknown to us, including from the Vatican, the History of Science Museum in Oxford, the Instituto Valencia of Don Juan in Madrid and the Islamic Museum in Cairo. It was also great to see art from private collections - the Bruschettini Foundation, the Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art, the Furusiyya Art Foundation and the Al Thani Collection.
The Biennale runs through to May 25, 2025. Here are some of my highlights. If you can, go!
