It was her nervous system in distress and burnout because it wasn’t how it was supposed to be.
Autism burnout for us is:
1. Not adapting to change of any shape or form
2. Being overstimulated by lots of noise, bright lights, too much contrast I.e too much to look at or too many flavours and textures on a plate
3. Masking all day and then being so overwhelmed as a result
4. Not being able to communicate how we are feeling
5. Feeling hypersensitive, irritable and over anxious
6. Withdrawal: not wanting to be around others or do anything that’s not essential
7. Mental and physical exhaustion
The list could quite literally go on. But focusing on sensory play helps to regulate my children and avoid burnout.
Imogen loves red so for her birthday set up I did everything red which she LOVED. She did say her fave theme was still Winnie though (which is her other special interest, and her safe space) ❤️

Today’s farm animal is cows!
Sensory play for Astrid has always been very much about feeding her tactile sensory seeking input and helping her regulate from overwhelm. And with that we opened up the world of learning through play.
But for Phoenix it is exploring other benefits too. It is using play to explore and develop language and communication. She doesn’t say many words at all, but if you watch these videos you’ll see how she has started trying to copy us by imitating the sounds. So she might not say mama but she’s trying to say moo and she loves saying bubble pop!
Through this tray we developed:
🚜 Language: what cows are, what they eat, where they live, what noise they make, what colours they are
🎨 Colour recognition: exploring the colours of cows
🌾 Senses: tactile through different textures, sight through different shapes and colours, sound through shaking, scooping and falling rice
🐄 Fine motor skills: scooping, dropping, throwing
👩🌾 Problem solving: posting the elements in the tent pocket, taking them out and repeat

I set this up last night as a little tactile pre bed exploration for Phoenix. But my god never again am I doing a tray that late! She just wanted to eat all the chickpeas 🤦♀️ however, she did seem to enjoy exploring the different textures and then we read the book as a bedtime story 🐷
Skills developed:
🐽Fine motor skills: picking up, pincer grip, pouring, throwing, filling
🐽Cause and effect: through sound and movement of the different textures
🐽Stimulating her senses: touch, sight, sound
🐽Language: we talked about what pigs do and the noises they make
So many skills explored through one simple play tray, showing trays don’t have to be filled with fancy resources to the brim. They can be simple. Because simplicity often encourages more imagination and creativity and gives children the space to explore and regulate without feeling overwhelmed!
