That’s why it’s disappointing to see that the Government has continued the decline in spending on nature.
Specifically, we’ve found that DOC is facing nearly $38 million in baseline funding cuts, alongside further cuts to environmental funding and the Climate Change Commission.
Budget 2026 does include a handful of positive new initiatives, like partial restoration of wilding pine control, loans for the transition off gas, and solar on schools.
We want our politicians in Aotearoa New Zealand to protecting nature and the environment. To do so, we need to take action to show that nature matters to us.

Your favourite mountain, beach, or river depends on strong conservation law. These places are protected today because of hard-won legal safeguards. But that’s now under threat.
The Government’s proposed Conservation Amendment Bill could fundamentally change how conservation land is managed, opening the door to development and weakening protections for nature.
The Bill would also make it much easier to exchange or dispose of millions of hectares of public conservation land, such as the Coromandel’s Cathedral Cove, Wellington’s Remutaka Ranges, or Dunedin’s Tunnel Beach.
Together, we can stand up to say that public conservation land is for people and for nature.

Richard, Jill, Paul, and Christine are just some of the many amazing volunteers working tirelessly to help native species thrive on the North Shore.
Tuff Crater is unique – with the remains of a volcanic crater encircling a tidal mangrove lagoon. But before the North Shore branch of Forest & Bird started restoration work, it was a jungle of weeds and considered a wasteland. For over 25 years, regular Aucklanders have been doing pest control, weed clearing, and infill planting.
Our Regional Conservation Manager Stacey Hill recently visited to see the fruits of their mahi. Each week, they take small actions for nature. Over a quarter of a century, the branch has planted over 28,000 native plants, arranged 600 events, worked more than 23,000 volunteer hours, and raised more than $300,000 for the reserve. Native birdlife is thriving including banded rail and spotless crake.
We believe that on the ground conservation like this is what makes Forest & Bird truly special. All around the motu, our members and volunteers are helping to restore nature, and over time, we see the benefits. None of this would be possible without volunteers.

You might have seen from an earlier post that I had the absolute honour to join on a bioblitz trip to the Denniston Plateau and Deep Creek area!
While I was there I was fascinated by the freshwater ecosystem scattered across the surface, home to the koura northern freshwater crayfish, and all the small invertebrates and aquatic plants that build the base of the ecosystem.
The Denniston Plateau and Deep Creek area is an incredibly unique environment in Aotearoa New Zealand. 20-30 million years ago it wasn’t a plateau at all, but a swamp at sea level. Millions of years later it’s been pushed up among the mountains and is now an alpine shrubland home to many unique taonga species.
However, this area is at risk of opencast mining. If you’d like to have your say, please visit Forest and Birds website to sign the petition to safeguard the area.

Jess started her journey in conservation by setting up a Youth Hub with her twin sister in Rotorua. Jess went on to lead the Ōtautahi Christchurch Forest & Bird Youth Hub, then serve as national Youth Director from September 2023.
"Growing up in Rotorua, I had a strong love for the forests," Jess says. "That's also why I'm so passionate to get other rangatahi involved – because I know how inspired and empowered they can become."
In that role she ran Forest & Bird's first online youth hui, organised a youth advocacy workshop during our centennial, and built official partnerships with School Strike 4 Climate, Gen Z Aotearoa, and Generation Zero.
Jess is an outstanding rangatahi who is dedicating her time and talent to the protection of te taiao.
