Suspended in space, Phone takes one of the most familiar images of contemporary life—the smartphone emoji—and returns it to the material world. What usually exists as a frictionless digital sign becomes a luminous object with weight, scale, and presence. In this sense, the work operates as an anti-NFT. Rather than transforming a physical object into a digital asset, it reverses the movement: it gives substance back to a digital image, forcing the viewer to confront it as an object among other objects.
Yet the work never fully escapes the digital realm. Almost every encounter with it is mediated through photography. Once photographed, the sculpture re-enters the circuits of screens, social media, and online circulation from which its form originally emerged. It oscillates between object and image, matter and data, never settling comfortably in either state.
The enlarged emoji also recalls two older technologies of self-fashioning. Its coloured squares resemble an artist’s palette, suggesting that creativity itself has been reformatted as a grid of selectable options. At the same time, the work evokes a make-up compact, a portable device through which identities are composed, corrected, and projected. The smartphone appears not simply as a tool but as the contemporary site where images, desires, and selves are continuously manufactured.
