Back in university, when I was studying glass and ceramics, I wanted to create these large-scale installations. The big forms, the moths, the hanging pieces, but I just didn’t have the time, the skill set, or the money to make something as striking as what I was imagining.
The drawings with the little faceted black gems… those were my way of explaining that they would become giant black glass “pupils”, with these beautiful moths crawling out of them.
At the time, I felt like everything needed to be made out of glass. Now I’m realizing it doesn’t have to be, it can be multimedia, whatever materials feel right to bring it to life.
Lately I’ve been quietly working away at home again, starting to create the moths, and feeling this pull to get back into glass blowing and ceramics to finally make those big hanging forms.
