This release brings together quite a few new geometries as I continue exploring what is possible with my technique, including two new series: Apex and Revolve.
Apex started from looking more closely at the peculiar forms and curves that appear when racetracks are squeezed into a landscape.
Revolve takes a different direction, spiralling the brush across the canvas in a way that really only a plotter can. The continuous motion through straights and corners creates these layered crossings that I’ve become slightly obsessed with.
There are also two larger Synthesize pieces in this release that I’m very proud of. They’re quite challenging to make and are painted with my larger self-built plotter.

Today I also spent some time testing a new addition to the studio: a dolly setup from Edelkrone. It’s basically like a plotter, but for your camera, and it works especially well for timelapses like this one.
I love it when the brush starts to break apart towards the end of some of the leaves. Or when the hairs split at the beginning because of the specific way each stroke starts with a slight push down into the paper.
I’m learning from traditional Japanese ink paintings. The pressure, movement and release of the brush become the shape of the leaf. This is the sequence I aim to capture in 3D and translate into the movement of my digital brush.
These broken, dry-brush textures are called kasure. These imperfections of handmade paintings are in strange contrast with the repeatability of my process.
There is a pleasant tension in trying to recreate something so dependent on the hand through a machine.
There’s a live connection between my iPad canvas and the plotter, including automated paint pickups. The tool was completely custom-made, so it still needs some improvements. The connection to the hardware works very well now, but I need to work more on ease of use. Detailed paintings aren’t really possible yet.
David Hockney created many of his works on an iPad. Think of each digital work as a memory of every brushstroke — its sequence, pressure and direction. That is such a treasure trove of information.
