In Episode 2 of our Latitude 40 podcast - Stories from the Edge, Jamie West sits down with long-time island builder Guy Ireland for a warm and thoughtful conversation about life, resilience and community on Flinders Island.

From an unexpected encounter with hitchhikers in New Zealand that eventually led him to the island, to decades spent building homes, mentoring apprentices and supporting local organisations, Guy reflects on a life shaped by hard work, connection and purpose.

The conversation explores what it takes to build and run a business in a remote place, the importance of passing skills to the next generation, and the sense of community that keeps people anchored to island life.

Guy also speaks openly about the life-changing accident that left him paralysed, and the determination that has helped him continue contributing to the community he cares deeply about.

If you enjoy honest stories about resilience, island life, and the people who build more than houses, subscribe to Latitude 40, share this with a mate, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. What small decision ended up changing your life?

Out on their 300 acre patch of Flinders Island, Naomi Creek - and David Dixon have quietly built a haven for some of our most vulnerable locals - the injured and orphaned wallabies and pademelons who find their way into their care

For the past six years, they’ve been bottle feeding through sleepless nights, building safe spaces for recovery, and giving each little life the best chance of returning home to the bush they belong to. Their work is gentle, tireless, and grounded in deep respect for the animals who share this island with us.

Here’s how Naomi puts it, in her own words:
"We have huge respect for the wildlife here. They were all here first before us humans came and interrupted things, so we feel a sense of responsibility to care for those who need our help. The fauna and their environment are an enormous part of what makes this place so special. It's an incredible privilege to have such a close connection with these animals, to see their development, behaviour and individual personalities.”

Caring for wildlife isn’t cheap, and Naomi and David currently fund all of this work themselves, from formula and pellets to pouches, bottles, enclosures, and vet bills. Every joey has its own needs, its own personality, and its own costs, and community support can make a real difference.
--------
We've raised close to $300 towards our goal of $1000 through the Recycle Rewards program. If you’d like to turn your recycling into real island impact, donating your Recycle Rewards credits is a simple way to help Naomi and David keep doing what they do best - giving our wildlife a second chance.
