Where should contact happen?
For a right-handed player like myself:
- The contact point should be slightly in front of the front hip (left hip if youβre in a neutral stance and stepping forward).
- The arm should be comfortably extended away from the body, not locked straight, but not bent tightly either.
The ideal contact point is usually around:
- 30β60 cm (1β2 feet) in front of your torso
- Far enough away that your swing can move freely
- Close enough that you remain balanced
Why in front?
1οΈβ£ The racket is moving fastest there
The forehand is a rotational stroke. Your legs drive, hips rotate, torso rotates, arm follows, racket accelerates.
The racket reaches its most effective hitting zone just before it passes your body.
If contact occurs:
- Too early (too far in front): you reach and lose balance, which affects power and control.
- Too late (beside or behind): the swing is cramped and the elbow tucked in, which diminishes power.
Contacting in front allows you to strike while the racket is still accelerating toward the target.
2οΈβ£ You can direct the ball
When contact is in front the racket face is easier to control and aiming becomes much more reliable. Late contact often causes: balls hit into the net or mishits.
3οΈβ£ It allows body rotation to contribute
Good forehands use the entire kinetic chain.
When contact is in front:
- hips can rotate through the shot,
- shoulders can rotate through the shot,
- weight can move forward.
If the ball gets too close to your body, rotation is restricted and the stroke becomes mostly an arm swing.
βββββββββββββββ
Performing this exercise with the extended left arm in front and away from the body creates space for the arm and the racket.

In these 4οΈβ£ exercises with a small 1 kg med ball we are focusing on improving stability of the shoulders, by engaging external and internal rotator cuffs. We are also improving strength of the grip by engaging forearm and finger flexors in releasing and catching the ball. π΅
Save it and try it next time you go to the gym. πͺπΌπΎ

Tennis players do insane (and sometimes very creative) workouts at the gym. Donβt you think? π Our training is designed to build the key skills we need on the court, including strength, speed, agility, balance, endurance, and explosive power. Stronger muscles help generate more force on serves and groundstrokes, while agility and quickness allow to change direction in an instant. ππΌββοΈ Core stability and balance improve control during shots, and endurance helps stay sharp through long, demanding matches. Every workout has a purpose: making us faster, stronger, and staying injury-free.π«Άπ»

I personally like to buy lots of new clothes, especially skirts and tops, not so much dresses. I use clay-court tennis shoes and I change them every two months as they simply wear out. I try to have two pairs that Iβm using daily. I like buying accessories such as visors, wristbands, or socks. Recently I even bought tennis earrings π . My favourite tennis bags are big tote bags. On top of those personal purchases I buy things for my lessons especially tennis balls. I also get a new teaching cart at least every two years because the wheels simple stop working on clay. Thatβs not all! I also buy racket strings quite often and test rackets for my lessons. Overall I enjoy getting everything tennis related and now my problem is to have enough storage. π±

After the serve, tennis players use explosive recovery footwork: jumping forward into the court, landing balanced on one leg, stepping in and moving back quickly into a ready position. This first movement after the serve is critical for reacting faster, covering the next ball, and taking control of the point.
ππΌ Do this drill with elastic band and a step to improve your serve recovery footwork and become quicker, more efficient, and always ready for the next shot! πΎ

Every serve, forehand, and backhand depends on efficient shoulder movement β combining mobility, stability, and control through full ranges like flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and internal/external rotation. If your shoulders lack strength or range of motion, youβre not only limiting performance but also increasing injury risk.
Save these 4 key shoulder drills to level up your game:
1οΈβ£ Inclined Dumbbell Shoulder Press (3kg each hand)
In a half-kneeling position (one knee on the mat), perform controlled shoulder presses. This targets shoulder flexion and stability while engaging your core to maintain balance. Great for building strength in functional positions used in tennis strokes.
2οΈβ£ Arm Openings + Circular Rotations (Half-Kneeling)
From a kneeling position, keep one arm extended forward (for stability) while the other performs horizontal abduction (opening back) and adduction (coming forward), followed by a circular motion overhead (circumduction). This drill improves coordination, mobility, and controlled internal/external rotation.
3οΈβ£ Supine Alternating Extension + Knee Drive (with 3kg dumbbells)
Lying on your back, alternate extending one arm backward while extending the opposite leg forward and then explosively bringing both forward. This integrates shoulder extension with core activation, mimicking cross-body coordination patterns essential in tennis.
4οΈβ£ Kneeling Arm Circles (Circumduction)
In a kneeling position, perform large forward circles with both arms. Focus on smooth, controlled circumduction to enhance shoulder mobility and increase range of motion across all planes.
π Add these drills to your gym routine to improve shoulder mobility, stability, and range of motion β and translate that into more powerful, controlled, and injury-free tennis.
