Works in progress, finished paintings, and everything in between.

What draws me to his work is the balance between control and unpredictability, the sense that the painting is evolving in real time while still feeling intentional and resolved.
His distinctive process brings together pigments, oils, varnishes, and mixed media in a spontaneous, fluid approach grounded in constant experimentation and careful consideration. Rather than attempting to imitate nature, Whelan draws from its rhythms and energy, allowing colour and form to move organically across the canvas. The result is work that feels almost suspended in motion: layered, luminous, and emotionally charged. His paintings invite us to experience abstraction rather than simply interpret it, leaving space for our own associations and responses.
Whelan’s work has gained an international presence. He is a resident artist at Chelsea Harbour Design Centre in London, CICA Museum in Seoul, and the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland, Canada. His Water Dance Series was also presented as a large-scale installation at Palazzo Bembo during the 2022 Venice Art Biennale.
