I tasted Château d’Yquem 2003 at a very appealing stage, rich, intense and highly concentrated, showing good depth and the first emerging tertiary nuances. The texture is smooth and polished, offering great presence and impressive length. Those who enjoy this opulent, botrytis-driven sweetness will likely rate it two or three points higher. Personally, I tend to prefer a fresher profile with more drive and acidity, closer to a Spätlese or Auslese style, but there is no denying the class in the glass.

Domaine Duroché Latricières-Chambertin 2021 is currently in a hedonistic primary fruit phase, seductive, vibrant, and irresistibly pure. The tannins are ultra-fine, and what’s striking is how approachable it already is, nothing like the often unyielding character many 2021s show today. Despite all the charm it offers now, I’d still give it a few more years. This is clearly on its way to becoming a grand Burgundy.

I love how Dom Pérignon P2 2002 is drinking right now. Everything feels settled yet alive, with depth, tension and a quiet confidence. The mousse is ultra fine, almost weightless, unfolding into a hedonistic palate spectrum and a mouthfeel at the very highest level, all carried by a long, resonant finish. Fully expressive, still fresh, and exactly at the stage I’ve been waiting for. Simply a dream in the glass.

The Bollinger R.D. 2008 is still far too young. Structurally impressive, but at this stage clearly dominated by the apple driven profile I often find in very young Bollinger, which rarely convinces me. I would generally welcome Bollinger allowing more time after disgorgement before releasing these Champagnes to the market. I would start opening this wine no earlier than ten to twelve years from now, when its true depth should finally emerge. All the components are clearly in place for this to become a brilliant 2008 in time.

The 2009 Sommerhalde from Huber, in magnum, shows how gracefully great Baden Pinot can age. Silky and poised, with fine tertiary nuance, remarkable depth, beautifully resolved tannins and a subtle green lift, everything feels balanced rather than pushed. The palate remains precise and persistent, carrying length and clarity. A mature, confident Spätburgunder that underlines just how timeless Huber’s Sommerhalde can be. Give these wines time and you will be rewarded.

The 2022 Coche Branco from Niepoort was a real surprise. Blind, I honestly would have placed it in Burgundy, even though it is vinified entirely from indigenous Portuguese grape varieties. Here, the name truly is the programme, with precision, restraint, beautifully judged reduction and mouthwatering acidity. Nothing loud, nothing forced, just clarity, tension and quiet confidence. The second photo captures Sidney opening the bottle with the same calm precision, thanks for sharing!

I revisited the 1995 Château Lafite Rothschild from magnum, a perfect reminder of why mature Lafite is so quietly compelling. Everything feels composed and effortless, silky tannins, refined structure and that calm sense of authority. Never about power, always about balance and restraint. What stands out most is the freshness it still shows today, vibrant and alive, with the harmony and structure to evolve gracefully for another three to four decades. Pure classical Bordeaux, super elegant, super classic, and a true joy to drink.

The 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild left me surprisingly underwhelmed. Smooth, round and technically well made, yet clearly lacking depth, length and real complexity. Everything feels polite and comfortable rather than compelling, with a profile closer to a solid 30–40 CHF Bordeaux than a First Growth. There is a certain harmony, but harmony alone simply isn’t enough at this level. By far the weakest bottle I have encountered so far of the otherwise much more convincing 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild.

The 1955 Latricières-Chambertin from Vandermeulen opens with a fully mature yet strikingly pure profile of dried red berries, rose petal, sous bois, gentle spice and a subtle iron nuance. On the palate it is light-footed but persistent, carried by completely melted tannins, still balanced acidity and a silky, resolved texture that speaks of age without fatigue. What makes this wine truly impressive is its evolution with air: it gained clarity, depth and inner coherence minute by minute, becoming more expressive and more precise over time. My final sip, taken after roughly an hour in the glass, was the most convincing, revealing a quiet intensity and a beautifully balanced, savory finish. Power is long gone, but harmony, precision and memory remain. Fully mature, fragile by nature, yet deeply rewarding, the 1955 Latricières-Chambertin is a compelling reminder of how great Burgundy can continue to unfold when patience is rewarded.
An unforgettable experience. Thank you so much for this, dear
95 NP (specifying a drinking window here is pointless, as each bottle performs quite differently after such a long time.)
The 2012 Romanée St. Vivant from Domaine de la Romanée Conti impresses me with its calm precision, inner tension and silky flow, driven by finesse rather than power. Still slightly primary, with the oak not yet fully integrated, it feels well proportioned rather than resolved, exactly what I expect at this stage. A wonderful freshness, clearly linked to the whole cluster component, carries the wine. Still at the beginning of its journey, it will need another seven to ten years to fully unfold, yet already delivers real pleasure through focus and impressive depth.
