Bacalar Lagoon is also known as the Lake or Lagoon of Seven Colors due to the different shades of blue of its crystalline water.
With its white limestone bottom, the water is famously clear, and is an excellent place for diving, snorkeling and swimming. This is a fresh water lake feed by underground cenotes, but it does look like the ocean. The lake is about 55km / 34 miles from tip to tip and 2km / 1.2miles at its widest point.
Bacalar also retains a more traditional Mexican feel than many other destinations in the region. More popular with national tourists than foreigners, it is a great place to come if you are interested in local culture and traditions.
Quintana Roo is an extremely popular state for tourism and some areas like Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen can get very busy. Bacalar, in contrast, remains relatively quiet and in low season you may be lucky enough to wander along parts of the lake without seeing too many other people.
Bacalar is conveniently located for exploring the local archeological zones and cenotes nearby, many of which are less well known in the region. Just like Bacalar, these sites are quieter than others in the state and you could very possibly be exploring them alone without any crowds.

Chichen Itza is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. In ancient, pre-Colombian times, Chichen Itza was a vibrant city with a diverse population of Mayan people extending well into the tens of thousands. At its peak, Chichen Itza was the most populous city in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. Even today, its ruins reflect a great civilization filled with architectural marvels and ancient secrets, including the famed El Castillo pyramid that dominates the site’s center. Many tourists confuse the city of Chichen Itza with its largest and most famous pyramid.
Archaeologists are unsure when, exactly, the building of Chichen Itza began, though historical records suggest that the city was in its early phases of development around 600-750 A.D.
Chichen Itza was founded by the Maya, an ancient people native to the Yucatan Peninsula. Historians believe that Chichen Itza was built due to its close proximity to the Xtoloc cenote.

The beauty of Holbox is in the simplicity, the nature and the slow rhythm it exists in. Art, happiness and a sense of calm abound everywhere. When you are here you can’t help but slow down and take it all in. It is a refreshing destination free from congestion and stress.
The main beach on Holbox, which runs all the way along its northern shore, is probably the best beach in Mexico. What makes a beach unique to me are the combination and gradient of colors in the water, and the shallow water. There are dozens or hundreds of acres of sand right off the shore that are covered in water that only goes up to your ankles. This means you can wade out to sea for multiple minutes and still only have the water come up to your knees.
