The banjo to pedal steel pipeline is real and I won’t feel guilty for this probably working on me. I don’t make the rules, I just inform them as a teacher. Haha 🤣 #pedalsteel #banjoplayer #banjoteacher #musiciansofinstagram #musicmemes
I am about ready yo start wearing kilts this summer if things don’t cool down a bit. Also, I need some festivals to go to.:( #banjo #banjoteacher #bluegrassfestival #summer #musicteacher
A solid flyer is important to any music studio marketing strategy. What do you think? Would this work on you? Haha (don’t worry, my number is on the back side of the tear off slips.) #musicteacher #banjoteacher #learnmusic #marketing #musicteachersofinstagram
“It’s never too early to start writing your own arrangements.” This video was recorded during my social media hiatus about two years ago and it was right at the beginning of my finger picking guitar journey. I had played bluegrass guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, bass, etc for years, but I had more and more student wanting to learn finger style and I felt woefully under qualified. I remember thinking, “I know how to be a musician d*mmit, why is it so hard.” And I realized that I was trying to make things way too complicated for myself. I knew the basic building blocks of building and arrangement of a tube that I liked and I really didn’t have to make it super complicated to arrange something satisfying and enjoyable to play. So I made a goal of making an arrangement of something recognizable with simple chord shapes and try to make it as accessible as it could. Looking back on it, It’s easy to cringe at some of the technique issues that I had, but I realized that I learned more in the process of making this arrangement than almost anything else. Making myself sit down and actually take stock of all the skills I had acquired to that point and try to make something completely my own was a humbling and illustrative process. It showed me my strengths and weaknesses and really put my knowledge to the test. So here’s my tip to you my friends. It’s never to early to begin arranging your own versions of things. Every time you learn a new piece, try to use the skills you learned to create something uniquely your own. It is the best learning tool I have come up with. #learnmusic #learnguitar #fingerpicking #readingrainbow

I initially felt like this might be a little too mean for my brand, but it feels appropriate at this point. Please just learn how to play the guitar. Play the ukulele. Song badly! Whistle! Do whatever at whatever level! Just make the music! #musicteacher #musician #noai #learnmusic #justdoıt
Bow holds are one of my favorite examples of technique being a relationship between a players body, their instrument, and their genres. If you grew up playing music in school or private lessons, you probably spent hours learning about the proper way to hold your instrument and bow, without really ever learning “why” you should do it that way. We learned that there was a “proper sound” for good tone. There was “one way” to hold your instrument. You may have even heard, “practice doesn’t make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” Here’s the thing… as a violin teacher myself, I will agree that there are some default techniques that made my life easier to learn the fiddle, but there is no guarantee that all of my systems will work for you. It’s not my job as a teacher to make you an exact copy of all of my techniques and skills. It is my job to help you find all the techniques that will work for you and your body. Is it easier for you to play with a full bow if you grip it higher on the stick? Great. That technique is used a lot in baroque and Irish fiddle playing. You like to put your thumb underneath the frog? That’s great for finger and wrist flexibility. We’ll just have to adjust and problem solve for your spaccato bowing. I feel like my job is to help you play music in anyway you want with as little physical discomfort as you can. If that means that you hold your bow or instrument differently? that’s fine by me. I would rather listen to a thousand musicians who feel comfortable in their hands and minds, than 10 perfect musicians who are all uncomfortable trying to fit a singular playing technique. Also, Michael Cleveland is the GOAT. Truly one of the best fiddle players out there! #violín #fiddle #musicteacher #fiddleteacher
