The home in some parts is elevated lightly above the sloping terrain, allowing selected program to slip beneath the main living level and working with, rather than against, the natural fall of the land. This elevation reduces ground disturbance and creates a sense of inhabitation among the tree canopy, lending the project an almost tree-house quality, sheltered, immersive and connected to the surrounding site. The home is also anchored in other parts, this creates a protected northern courtyard alongside the living zones and bedrooms, providing a sheltered outdoor environment that becomes an extension of the home and a place of retreat within the landscape.
Like a contemporary act of land art, the house cuts through the terrain, framing expansive northern views across open paddocks while simultaneously carving out a protected southern courtyard.

This sheltered courtyard operates as both climatic buffer and place of retreat, tempering harsh north-westerly heat and shielding the home from cold southerly and easterly winds. In this way, the building acts as a refuge within an exposed environment, offering moments of stillness, enclosure, and intimacy against a broader, elemental backdrop.

Commencing construction August.
The project is conceived as a disciplined exploration of restraint, material clarity and performance. At its core is a commitment to doing less, but doing it better, reducing the building to a limited palette of three materials, each pushed with intent and precision. Raw precast concrete forms the primary language, operating simultaneously as structure, enclosure and interior finish, eliminating unnecessary layers and establishing a cohesive, robust system.

🏆 Entries for the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards are now open.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT - Kross House
Shortlisted | Residential Class 1 – New Buildings | 26th Australian Timber Design Awards

Kross House by is a 95% timber residence at Mount Martha, Victoria. Elevated above its sloping coastal site on a timber bearer and joist system, the home appears to float above the landscape, anchored by natural rock and a single V-shaped steel column.

A cross-shaped plan organises the layout along north–south and east–west axes, forming a central boardwalk breezeway inspired by the nearby Mount Martha foreshore.

Blackbutt Armourply from lines floors, cabinetry, and walls throughout, while shiplapped Blackbutt cladding flows from exterior to interior without interruption. Dark-stained V-groove timber ceilings replace plasterboard entirely. Exposed black-stained glulam beams span the carport and central cross, and Weathergroove Natural panels clad the side and rear elevations. Blackbutt timber-framed double-glazed windows by High Craft Windows complete the material palette.

Every surface in this house is timber. Structure, skin, and detail.

COURTYARD HOUSE by • inspired by the Italian palazzo and the Australian courtyard home, this house is shaped around a strong indoor–outdoor connection.

Three landscaped zones • front yard, central courtyard and rear yard • organise the plan, with the courtyard forming the calm heart of the home.

Sheltered from neighbours yet open to tree canopies above, the courtyard connects closely to surrounding interiors, revealing itself from multiple viewpoints.

A restrained material palette reinforces this relationship: timber batten ceilings guide movement through the house, set against crisp white concrete floors.

Elongated brown brickwork grounds the home in its Templestowe context, echoing the horizontal rhythm of the built form.

A quiet, considered home where landscape and architecture move as one.
