The competition asks entrants to design for a regional town-edge site to the west of Melbourne, on Wadawurrung Country. The brief calls for biodiverse, Country-centric alternatives to conventional greenfield development – unique housing typologies that open up new possibilities for how neighbourhoods at the urban fringe can be built and inhabited.
Sub-topia asks what a different approach could look like: housing that is different in form and embedded in place. Approaches that consider Country as a design driver, or that imagine accessible, liveable communities beyond the default patterns of subdivision.
These are the kinds of questions we actively engage with in our own work – innovative responses across scales and disciplines. Sponsoring this competition is a way of putting that thinking into the hands of the next generation of practitioners and seeing what they do with it.
$15,000 prize pool. Open for registrations by 8 June, with submissions due 12 July 2026.

Cremorne is a suburb mid-transition, with a light industrial past and an emerging future as an innovation precinct – and this tension shaped our design. Carved along its 65-metre Dover Street frontage, the brown brick podium has a series of scallops that break the building down to human scale. It also allows for hospitality moments to spill onto the street.

Design excellence has shifted from a qualitative consideration to something that can genuinely change a project’s approval pathway, timeframe and risk profile. The panel will dig into what that means in practice – for architects, planners and developers alike.
Alongside Briony will be Kerstin Thompson, Matt Cohen (DTP), Jessie Legge and Elle Harrington (Tract).

Once complete, it will have a vibrant ground plane playing host to a hospitality and retail offering, with a mix of residential dwellings above, all centred around the site’s heritage pumphouse and valve house.
Very exciting to see this big hole in the ground that is our basement progressing every day! Despite the rain, we had a fun few days with the client Dasco, resolving key facade details and celebrating recent milestones.

As part of our culture committee, we had set up outside the office, then we poured some spritzes and enjoyed the afternoon together – a reminder of why studio culture matters as much as the work itself.

After an early morning departure from Melbourne/Naarm, we arrived in Bendigo on Dja Dja Wurrung Country and went to Wanyarra Dum or ‘Frog Ponds’ – a significant cultural and environmental site located along Bendigo Creek. It was formerly a waste dump and has been revitalised to create a series of ponds for stormwater filtration and to support native wildlife and cultural practices of Djaara (Dja Dja Wurrung People).
We walked on Country, hearing stories, followed by a Welcome and a Smoking Ceremony. We then went to DUMAWUL Hub, where we had a cultural competency session, covering First Nations history across Australia, with a specific focus on Victoria and Djaara as well. We finished up with a short tour of some built projects in Bendigo city centre that DJAARA have consulted on. It was great to be able to see some built outcomes of real consultation – projects that have been received with pride and excitement.
It was a big day with lots of learning. Thank you to the team at DJAARA for the time and energy you gave to educate our team on the history of our country and of Country.
