If your hide is too big for the frame to go on a table - like this 6ft long deer - do vertical framing 🗼
• make the holes around the edge first, so they’re ready
• attach your long weaver string to the corner of the frame
• attach the hide to the other corner with a short piece of string
• extend the hide back to your weaver string at the other corner - now the hide is held up by the string, not by you!
• weave the top of the hide (“top” according to gravity in the moment; this ks actually the belly of the hide)
• if you need even more assist, elevate the frame to weave the rest of the hide. I do this and make sure I squat instead of hunch over. I get as many healthy body movements in as I can
• If squatting is a challenge, just elevate the frame higher. Find what’s painless and comfortable.
PS “mise en place” means “everything in its place” ask your kitchen witch friends about it.
• I start with a salted hide, always. Salt helps remove hyaluronic acid from a fresh hide, a pesky part of the ground substance that doesn’t dissolve out otherwise
• Next I decide if I’m going to pickle the hide or not. For this one, I didn’t pickle; so I gently wet-scrape it before it goes into the bark-liquor. I’m very cautious here cos I’m a beast when it comes to scraping and I will put holes in a sheep hide if I go all-in
• If I pickle the hide, it’s stronger when I wet-scrape and I do a fully thorough scrape before the bark-liquor soak
• At the end of 2 weeks, the soak is complete. I do this final scraping, mostly important if I’m working a non-pickled leather, as it will have a bit of membrane still on it
• This last scrape serves another purpose too: I’m squeegeeing out liquid, so when I go to rinse the leather and wool of tannins, it gets rinsed quicker and with less water

They found a vulnerable spot in the fence and busted it wide open (the pallet blocking the hole is post-escape). Took to the garden where there is a buffet of everything they could dream of eating.
I literally send my email list a farm life update and clicked send moments before I realized what they were up to.
When I first started, I thought it was all about powering as much physical work as possible. At the time I was ready for it. I was young and stoked to for the challenge.
But over time…nah.
Now I’m way more about applying the right technique in the right moment.

Technique for softening sheepskins without breaking your back:
• first, dry a dressed hide stretched tightly in a frame
• rehydrate with wet towels
• open with a hand tool (you’ll see it turn white)
• casually soften here n there for a few hours
= the leather dries quickly + stays supple with less softening needed
= the framing + drying does a ton of the work

I take naming pretty dang purposefully; I think there’s a lot of impact to a name. So with the help of my dear kin I landed on Fern + Roe as the name for this project: Fern 🌿 because it was the first medicine plant I learned to work with (liquorice fern, specifically) + many ferns are traditionally used in hide tanning (fishskin tanning, specifically); Roe 🦌 because it is an ancient word for deer, though eventually in English Roe-deer became a specific kind of deer - the one from the regions my matrilineal ancestors lived. (I’ve never tanned a Roe-deer hide but if any of yall European tanners want to do a barter, hmu:) )
A minute after landing on this name, I realized that I already had paid homage to it: I have a tattoo of a fern on my right arm and a tattoo of a deer on my left 😆 I’ve had these for years; the fern was one of my first tattoos from back when I was in herb school in Portland, OR + the deer is from the incredible artist during a skills gathering I co-created on Cortes Island. I often think of hide tanning as a folk magic - it’s the everyday, practical ritual that imbues our lives with connection and meaning, but there’s also a special pattern of coincidences like these, things that align ‘just right’ with this craft that continue to surprise and delight as the years go on.

Hide tanning is the creation of animal-based textiles, through the transformation of skin —> fabric. Sometimes this fabric is leather, sometimes buckskin; it can be a sheepskin rug or a chamois cloth or a horse saddle. If it was made into textile and it comes from an animal, hide tanning is the magic it went through.
Creating textiles from what’s been bestowed on us by the animals we hunt or raise is an ancient practice; it predates the creation of plant textiles by 100,000 years. Before cotton, before linen, before wool, there was hide tanning. And there still is.
Like so, so many of our collective ancestral crafts, hide tanning has been co-opted by a massive industrial supply chain; one that took it out of community and put it through a system of factory production, toxic chem-synthesis, and environmental devastation. This craft, that can be one of the greatest teachers in kinship and inter-dependance of multi-species community, is often so far gone from our minds in settler culture that we can’t fathom how our shoes came to be, or what ingredients might create a belt. We also often can’t fathom the role that death plays in the abundance of life, in the inevitability of death through deep, cyclical time; but hide tanning makes something beautiful + life-giving out of death; it demands that we play our part in it, too.
