Ever felt like self-care is one of those things other people do?

The ones with more time, money, or freedom.

For many people, self-care feels more like a luxury than a necessity, making it easy to push asideโ€”waiting for when youโ€™ve got more time, finished the to-do list, or finally have the house to yourself.

But hereโ€™s the thing: you donโ€™t have to wait for the perfect time to offer yourself self-care.

Because I suspect youโ€™re already doing one of the most basic forms of self-care.

Eating.

Itโ€™s one of the simplest, most essential ways to care for yourself.

And it doesnโ€™t require a face mask, a quiet corner, or even a free hour.

What if, instead of thinking of self-care as something โ€˜extra,โ€™ you saw your meals, snacksโ€”any eating occasionโ€”as a way to take care of yourself in the most literal sense?

Itโ€™s not the most glamorous self-care. But itโ€™s self-care, nonetheless ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

So, I invite you to take a moment to consider what self-care really means to you. Could eating be a part of it?
Acknowledging and responding to hunger isnโ€™t always easy.

For many, the sensation of hunger can be hard to recogniseโ€ฆ

โ€ฆor absent altogether (hey there my neurodivergent friends!)

Or, it might bring up a lot of uncomfortable emotions, especially if youโ€™ve been disconnected from the sensations of hunger for years.

While sensations associated with hunger offer a helping hand, becoming skilled in listening to your hunger cues isnโ€™t the ultimate objective of having a more peaceful relationship with food.

And youโ€™re not failing at becoming an intuitive eater if you and hunger arenโ€™t acquainted yetโ€ฆor never will be.

So what can you do instead?

โœจ Start with Curiosity: Instead of trying to force yourself to feel hunger, approach it with curiosity. Ask yourself, โ€œWhat, if anything, am I noticing in my body right now?โ€ Whether itโ€™s actual hunger, some other sensations, or the thoughts and feelings surrounding it, the goal is to observe without judgement.

โœจ Consider Your Hunger History: Reflect on how your relationship with hunger has developed over time. Have you been taught to ignore it? Punish yourself for feeling it? Never felt it? Understanding your hunger history can help untangle some of the emotions wrapped up in it.

โœจ Give Yourself Permission: Itโ€™s okay to eat when youโ€™re hungry. Itโ€™s okay to eat even if youโ€™re not sure youโ€™re hungry. Itโ€™s okay to not have this all figured out right now. Giving yourself permission to explore your hunger or just meeting that biological need for food โ€”without having all the answersโ€”is a powerful first step.
Yโ€™all seemed to enjoy my quick ramen lunch I shared a couple of weeks ago, so Iโ€™m back with another one of my fave quick lunches - the Sunday Roast Salad.

Hereโ€™s how it rollsโ€ฆ

When Iโ€™m making a roast dinner, Iโ€™ll chuck in a couple of extra carrots and potatoes (sometimes Brussels sprouts too) to the roasting pan.

Next day, I chop up the roasted veggies and leftover roasted meat and chuck them in a bowl with whatever salad ingredients I have on hand (this time it was iceberg lettuce, cucumber and olives)

Add my fave dressing et voilร ! Sunday Roast Salad ๐Ÿฅ—

What do you reckon? Is this one to try?

P.S. Salad in the pic not indicative of the serving size you might need/enjoy

P.P.S. Not confined to Sundays - you can make this whenever youโ€™re roasting up some goodies ๐Ÿ˜œ
Iโ€™ve had people hire *me* to take photos before, so Iโ€™m not the total worst at it, but having a pop-up shoot with Jax from meant I had to step out of my comfort zone being the โ€˜photographerโ€™ and not being in control of everything - the lighting, posing andโ€ฆ

โ€ฆbeing able to quickly delete photos of myself that I didnโ€™t like! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

To be completely honest with you, I wasnโ€™t in raptures about all the photos when they came back - not because of the photos themselves or Jax work - cos she is incredible, but because I was seeing myself in poses and angles that I donโ€™t normally see myself in.

There was an incongruence in my brain.

Between the database it has built about what *it* knows I look like, and then trying to make sense of these new images.

Of course, I *knew* it was me, but itโ€™s a โ€˜meโ€™ my brain is not used to (typically at the end of my outstretched arms taking a selfie, amiright?!).

But, what I did notice on this occasion, was that I could be neutral and pragmatic about them - not hate on myself or spiral like I have done in the past when Iโ€™ve had other people take my photo.

I wanted to share this with you because body image โ€˜workโ€™ is not a single thing.

And itโ€™s not one-and-done.

There isnโ€™t a destination to arrive at and you are definitely not alone in finding situations and experiences confronting or challenging to navigate.

It can also be slow, painstaking work and then surprise you like it did me, that actually your relationship with yourself is shifting and changing.

Do you find it uncomfortable having your photo taken?

Are there things that you do to help you move through that discomfort?

Would it help to share what I did to take the โ€˜eeeeekโ€™ energy about someone else taking my pic down a notch?

Lemme know below โฌ‡๏ธ
Itโ€™s hard to let go of the need to know itโ€™s โ€˜workingโ€™ when weโ€™re used to operating in a system that only views things as either โ€˜workingโ€™ or โ€˜not workingโ€™. But Iโ€™m curiousโ€ฆ

Does wanting something to measure help? Or is it putting an obstacle in your path? (FYI thereโ€™s no right or wrong answer here- you get to choose!).

Iโ€™m curious because our words matter.

And 'measuring progress' implies a quantifiable change. (Quantifying and counting sh!t comes straight from Diet Culture's handbook).

So, if you hold fast to wanting something to measure as a sign of progress, you may run the risk of activating your diet mentality. (And just end up swapping measuring your portions, calories, and steps for something new).

Rather than asking; โ€œHow do I measure my progress so I know this is working?โ€ you could ask;

What might I be noticing aboutโ€ฆ(my eating/mood/energy/binges/body image/etc.) that will tell meโ€ฆ(Iโ€™m headed in the direction I want to be going/my relationship with food and body is shifting/Iโ€™m recovering/Iโ€™m less wrapped up in Diet Culture/Iโ€™m more connected with my body etc.).

Or;

โ€œIf I take weight out of the equation for a minute, what would I love to be different about my relationship with food and body in 3 months, 6 months, a year?โ€

Those two questions may just give you a deeper, richer and more fulfilling path forward.

Two completely separate things.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Truly.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
You may have been made to feel like you are not good enough because you binge eat.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
That you are a failure because you canโ€™t get your eating together.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Iโ€™m so sorry that has happened.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
I want you to know that your binge eating has nothing to do with your worth as a human on this planet.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
You are worthy if you binge eat.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
You are worthy if you are working on healing your relationship with food and still binge eat.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
You are worthy if you havenโ€™t binged for ages and find yourself binging again.

What do you notice about the quality of your breathing after you have been holding your breath for a bit? (Maybe you can remember what that felt like if you played that game to see who could hold their breath the longest?!)
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
When you do finally take that first breath, you are gasping for air and inhaling and exhaling quickly right?
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Your breathing feels urgent.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Itโ€™s quite different from the calm, pleasant rhythm of inhaling and exhaling that happens when you are going about your business, trusting that your body knows what it needs to do with its breathing.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Gasping for air after holding your breath is your body overcompensating for being denied a biological need.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Food is also a biological need.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
So, it makes sense that our bodies respond in a similar way when we deny them food or ENOUGH food.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Not getting enough to eat is like holding your breath.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
When you next get the opportunity, eating is going to feel urgent and rapid and like you canโ€™t get the food in quick enough.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €

When weโ€™re pursuing weight loss, the goal is pretty simple.

Lose weight.

Which kinda makes โ€˜measuring progressโ€™ simple as well.

Because weight loss is tangible, we understand what it means when itโ€™s โ€˜workingโ€™.

We know itโ€™s working when the number on the scale is decreasing.

We know weโ€™re on the right track when we need to buy new (smaller) clothes.

So, what do we do when it comes to Intuitive Eating or any other non-diet approach where weight loss isnโ€™t the outcome of focus?

I gotchu! Head on over to the blog to read 35 ways to measure progress that have nothing to do with weight or hopping on the scale.

I normally keep myself in a pretty solid non-diet bubble, but this International Dieting Month has seen peopleโ€™s diet BS permeating the edges.

And my eyes are hurting from all the exasperated rolling theyโ€™re doing ๐Ÿ™„

Eating out and overhearing people talking about what theyโ€™re doing with food and movement as part of their new bootcamp thatโ€™s the stuff eating disorders are made of (seriously- Iโ€™m not sharing specifics because it was VERY disordered).

The people in a Pilates class before me moaning about how hard it is to cut out sugar (and spreading nutrition misinformation while theyโ€™re doing it).

It seems this year the crap is particularly strong.

So sending strength friends as we navigate this together ๐Ÿ’ช

And can we take a minute to appreciate that Aubrey Plaza has been perfecting the stoney stare as April Ludgate long before before her character Harper in The White Lotus?
Diet culture has done a darned good job at convincing us that we should be able to survive on not much food.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
That we are doing it all wrong if we crave food.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
That we should be able to override our hunger.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
But the truth is, food is fundamental for our survival as a species.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
This means our super-smart bodies have evolved in such a way that we find food pleasurable and rewarding.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
That food tastes good and feels good in our bodies.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
Because if food and eating was an awful experience, of course, we would avoid it!
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It is therefore in our bodies best interest to make food something we want to keep coming back to.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
It is our natural biology.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
We are hard-wired to find food and eating pleasurable.
โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €โ €
So, this is your gentle reminder that there is nothing wrong with experiencing a desire to eat or craving a particular food.
