One of the things I love most about bird photography is how relative “common” really is.
A Cattle Egret may be completely ordinary in parts of the world where they live year-round, but here — catching one dropping in during migration feels genuinely exciting. It’s this tiny little intersection of timing, luck, and paying attention.
I’ll never get tired of those moments when a traveling species makes a brief appearance and suddenly your familiar landscape feels just a little more wild and connected to the rest of the world. 🤍

Just a tiny puffball learning that the whole world is basically one giant puddle to explore.

Migration magic.
To many, this roadside puddle was probably just an eyesore. But for this willet, it was a place to rest, feed, and continue its long journey north.
I loved the quiet reminder that meaningful habitat doesn’t always look dramatic or pristine. Sometimes it’s the overlooked little places that matter most.
No glamorous shoreline.
Just a bird, a puddle, and a moment that made me pull over, get out of the car, and get a little muddy.

In nature, there is no such thing as a bad mother.
Only difficult conditions. Harsh seasons. Hunger. Danger. Survival.
Years ago, somewhere in the middle of yet another fertility appointment, I told one of my doctors something that has stayed with me ever since:
“There’s really no such thing as a bad mother. There are, however, bad circumstances.”
I think about that often.
Because motherhood isn’t perfection. It isn’t always soft lighting and beautifully timed moments. Sometimes it’s exhaustion. Fear. Sacrifice. Grief. Sometimes it’s simply continuing forward when you have absolutely nothing left in the tank.
And still… mothers love.
Watching this goose guide her gosling across the water made me pause for a moment. No applause. No self-congratulation. No questioning whether she’s doing enough. Just quiet instinct. Watchfulness. Protection. Presence.
Nature doesn’t overcomplicate motherhood. It simply understands the assignment.
Stay close. Keep them safe. Keep going.
As someone who fought unbelievably hard to become a mother, I don’t take any of it lightly. Not the beauty. Not the responsibility. Not even the hard days.
So today feels less about celebrating some idealized version of motherhood, and more about honoring the resilience behind it.
To every mother — the exhausted ones, the grieving ones, the joyful ones, the trying ones, the stepmothers, the grandmothers, the women still waiting, and the women who mother in ways the world doesn’t always see — Happy Mother’s Day. 🤍

Yesterday, I got lucky.
In the middle of everything going on, I carved out about an hour to just pause and step outside with my camera — no agenda other than to soak in spring migration for a little while. And honestly, I needed it more than I realized.
The trees are suddenly alive right now. Tiny travelers everywhere. Most only passing through for a brief moment before continuing north.
This little warbler stopped me in my tracks. The markings, the attitude, that flash of yellow tucked into the feathers… just unreal up close. It’s hard to believe something this small can travel thousands of miles and still arrive looking this perfect.
Days like this remind me why I fell in love with bird photography in the first place. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop long enough to notice what’s already around you.
And somehow, the timing felt extra special — yesterday was World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated each year on the second Saturday in May to recognize and protect migratory birds and the incredible journeys they make. 💛

Me: completely emotional over finally finding the owlet.
Owlet: deeply inconvenienced by my existence.
Looking at me exactly like I just said, “Smile for the camera.”
Caught somewhere between “why are you here?” and “this better not end up on Instagram.”
That expression says, “I literally cannot deal with you right now.”
Teenage owl attitude is apparently very real.

For years, just a voice in the trees—never quite a look.
Today, finally, a face to the song.
Not the bright raspberry male, but unmistakably… a Purple Finch.

These are the moments I chase—
not for the photograph, but for the feeling of finding something wild, fleeting, and perfectly placed—
and the quiet luck of witnessing warblers in their most luminous season…
though this one lingers, a small burst of sunlight that stays with us all summer.

What does a perfect outing look like? Yesterday, I was reminded that it’s been too long since I had a chance to go birding…properly. Of course I’ve been taking shots here and there every chance I get. Don’t give me that look! I’d love to spend hours of uninterrupted time with you.
