I’d like to give a special shoutout to all my non Muslims colleagues who make the working environment inclusive to us - I’ve got heaps of registrars and consultants who end up reminding me to pray/break my fast/have suhoor (meal before fasting) during my night shifts and who always ensure there’s halal food options available, ensure I get religious celebration days off etc. my experiences with colleagues have been excellent but there definitely have been isolated incidents like the ones mentioned in the video which have not been ok. #muslim #doctor #islamophobia

It’s crazy to me that the organisation I heavily cite in my work and make quick references to in clinical settings would choose me to be a part of their network. It genuinely feels like a celebrity crush (except more like a nerd role model type of thing) just followed me back and wants to work with me

For my family and I, this achievement is extra special as we’ve lived in poverty for pretty much our entire lives. I completed all my schooling and Neuroscience years using the laptop in the second last image. This laptop was given for free by the Australian government and was the only device I had access to. This bloody brick 🧱 was the thing that helped me get a 98.55 ATAR, a 98 percentile score in the medical school entry exam for Australia and New Zealand and a near-high distinction average in my neuro degree.

I was also privileged enough to be raised by a single mother, the strongest woman in the world (seen in the last pic). She endured unspeakable hardships to raise her 4 kids alone. There were plenty of times we had no food to eat and even had to sleep on the floor in houses of people we didn’t even know because we had no money.

In kindergarten, I remember the teacher telling the class to draw a picture of us in our dream career. I wanted to be the king of the world (💀💀) or an astronaut 👨🚀. Before I could draw it, I remember considering what I heard being said about my family from horrible people around us: “your kids will never amount to anything…” and “a single mother’s kids have nothing better to do than die early to avoid an embarrassing life”. I then drew myself in a taxi (there’s nothing wrong with driving a taxi btw - it’s the concept of limiting a child’s dream) because that’s what my biological father was and that was the limit people around us assigned to my family.

My mum knew that people growing up in backgrounds like ours typically ended up in gangs doing all the wrong things (as did many of my childhood friends). She wanted a different future for us so she spent ~12 years doing part time uni/tafe while raising 4 kids to show us that we could achieve anything we put our mind to.

I’m not sure how she did it but my mother must’ve whispered something completely crazy to convince that kindergarten boy that he could be whatever the hell he wanted. Alhamdulilah ❤️
