Tradescantia Fluminensis Lavender.
Happy #tradescantiatuesday!
Lavender was struggle for me. It stayed weak, grew poorly, and kept reverting. I was constantly removing green shoots, and it drove me crazy.
I placed it outside last summer and it did improve. I took a few cuttings and brought them inside, hoping for a fresh start. But slowly, they reverted too.
At some point, I realised I was tired of fighting this plant. So I let it go.
If you like the look of Lavender but want something easier, I would recommend Tradescantia Mundula Fairy Wings instead (last pic). It has small leaves, thin stems, and a very similar look. But it holds its variegation so much better.
If you can get your hands on one, you will not regret it!

Bonus tip: the medium matters
Sometimes the problem is not your care, but the medium itself.
Water propagation is easy and simple to monitor, but cuttings often need time to adjust when moved to soil.
Soil skips one step but requires careful watering, especially in low light.
Sphagnum moss is my go to for weak or struggling cuttings. It holds moisture while still allowing air around the stem, creating a gentle environment for root growth.
If your cuttings keep failing, changing the medium can sometimes make all the difference.

Part 5: Watering mistakes
This is the most common reason Tradescantia cuttings fail.
Too much water can cause rot before roots have time to form. Cuttings need moisture and air, and constant wetness quickly throws that balance off.
If your cuttings suddenly collapse or turn mushy, overwatering is often the cause.
Do not miss the final part of this series on Sunday, where I am sharing a bonus tip that can make a huge difference.

Part 4: Low light
Low light can ruin propagation without you even realising it.
Without enough light, cuttings do not have the energy they need to grow roots. Even if watering and timing are right, rooting can completely stall.
Low light also keeps the medium wet for longer, which increases the risk of rot.
Do not miss the next part on Wednesday, this is the most common reason cuttings fail.

Part 3: Flowering stems
Flowers look nice, but they make propagation harder.
When a stem is flowering, most of its energy goes into blooms instead of roots. This often leads to slow rooting or cuttings that never make it.
It is still possible to propagate flowering stems, especially if you remove the flowers, but success rates are lower.
The good news is that each stem is its own individual plant. A flowering stem does not affect the others, so you can safely take cuttings from non flowering stems on the same plant.
Do not miss the next part on Sunday, this mistake is easier to make than you think.

Part 2: A stressed mother plant
Weak cuttings usually come from a stressed plant.
If the plant you take cuttings from is struggling, the cuttings will struggle too. Low light, pests, overwatering, or long term stress all affect how well a cutting can root.
If propagation keeps failing, step back and look at the mother plant. That is often where the real problem starts.
Do not miss the next part on Thursday, flowers can change everything.

I like to keep it simple, so I try not to use too many ingredients. This mix ensures my plants get good drainage to minimize the risk of overwatering and promote healthy roots.
You can make it simpler by just switching the coco coir for more potting soil.
When it comes to pumice, perlite is just as good, if not even a better option. But I just can’t stand the feel of it or the way it looks—it literally gives me the chills! So, pumice it is for me. 😅😅

The trick is to chop and prop them!
And before you jump on me and say that I’m wrong, that they branch out on their own, it’s true for some varieties, but not all! Most of the time, you need to trim them to encourage new growth. You’ll also want to trim them before they get too long, as they become weak and brittle with length.
Now that spring is here, it’s the perfect time to give your plants a little extra care and a trim!
Have you trimmed your Tradescantia recently?
