Found this one on my first day in the Amazon, clinging to the roof of a hut to shelter from the rain. It was blending in so effortlessly that you would walk right past it unless your eyes are trained to find insects.
That constant head swaying you see mantises do is not restlessness. It is how they judge depth and distance with eyes that cannot move. It also meant it never stayed steady long enough for a stack, so I worked with what it gave me.

When I first saw this grasshopper on a day hike, I was mesmerized by the colors but I knew I had zero chance of getting a good shot at that time of the day and my chances would increase exponentially if I returned back at night to find them. Well, nightfall came and it stood still for a few minutes for this portrait, before hopping away. Big shout out to the guide for holding the dead leaf behind the subject to give it that lovely yellow background, allowing the blue face pop more. Happy how the shot turned out.
