Our Fellows and of presented the outcomes of their Experimental Fellowship with, Situated Regionalism, at the Bauhaus Earth workshop. Material fragments, construction methods, and processes were discussed with a sounding board of jury members, experts, and guests.

The project investigates how local soils, natural fibres, bio-based additives, and vernacular knowledge can inform contemporary earthen construction in Vietnam.

Together, these outcomes make regional soil knowledge visible and applicable, positioning earthen construction as a culturally grounded, climate-conscious alternative within Vietnam’s rapidly industrialising building context.

New report in print and online!

This report presents the outcomes of the Experimental Fellowship project “Earth, Lightly”, undertaken by Fellows and of, with expert consultancy in material development provided by.

Conducted at the Bauhaus Earth Research Workshop in June 2025, the study of earth-based composite materials builds on exploratory research initiated during the Fellows’ four-day residency at in St. Gallen. There, initial artistic experimentation established key insights into the base material.

The process reflects a dialogue between artistic practice and scientific material research, positioning Light Earth not as a fixed formulation but as a flexible, context-responsive system and contemporary technique.

Introducing our first Experimental Fellowship in partnership with.

We are pleased to welcome Thibaut Barrault and Cyril Pressacco of as our new Experimental Fellows.

Their Fellowship project, "Inhabited Thermal Delights", starts from a simple premise: existing buildings should no longer be seen as constraints to be corrected, but as resources to be interpreted.

Working on the transformation of 176 social housing units for, the largest social housing provider in Paris, the Fellowship explores how thermal design can become a driver of architectural transformation. TThrough the study of bio-based insulation systems and building on their experience with hemp-based materials, the project investigates how environmental requirements can generate new spatial qualities, improve residents’ comfort, and open up new aesthetic possibilities for the renovation of existing buildings.

Supported by as expert partners, Thibaut Barrault and Cyril Pressacco will test and evaluate hemp-based insulation solutions alongside alternative bio-based materials, drawing on their experience with natural construction systems. The research will examine how these materials can contribute to large-scale housing renovation, assessing both their technical performance and their capacity to enhance architectural quality.

By positioning thermal design as an architectural project rather than solely a technical exercise, “Inhabited Thermal Delights” aims to develop practical methodologies for the implementation of natural materials in large-scale housing renovation.

New report online! Our Fellows concrete.matters from present “Pamphlet Series Part 3: make concrete reuse matter” — a practice-ready publication on low-tech reuse strategies.

The three-part publication series explores: “why concrete matters”, “why reuse matters”, and now—how to “make concrete reuse matter through low-tech, product-based strategies”.

Following earlier publications that addressed research on the necessity and challenges of preserving existing structures and the potential of product-based reuse of concrete, this latest report completes the development and real-world implementation of the REMIX and REMODULE strategies.

Focussing on product-based reuse, both approaches are based on the different states of the material during selective deconstruction, demolition or at the recycling yard. REMIX makes use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from demolition sites, while REMODULE employs reinforced or unreinforced concrete slabs obtained from selective dismantling. The aim is to transfer these elements into sustainable new construction in the form of building products and value chains.

At AM26 by in Munich, from the moderated the Focus Session Phase Zero — Regenerative Future Practices. The conference brought together international voices to explore how architecture can respond to ecological, political, and material uncertainty.

The session featured two Experimental Fellowship projects: Grunt by and concrete.matters by. Both projects were conceived in partnership with.

Grunt explores the use of contaminated soils in post-industrial and war-related contexts, including applications for a regenerative rebuilding and earth-based products in Ukraine and beyond. concrete.matters investigates the reuse of concrete structures and new circular value chains, introducing product-based strategies. Together, they point to a new practice ecosystem where architecture, craftsmanship, research, and policy align to bring alternative approaches into practice.

Key questions were explored in working groups focused on five areas — Regulation, Policy, Finance, Value Chain, and Material — leading to important discussions and takeaways: How can contaminated war debris in Ukraine be reused as a resource for regenerative reconstruction? What needs to change – in terms of financing and value chains – to make recycled materials competitive with conventional ones? Do stricter CO2 regulations and taxes help, or is a broader shift in mindset required? How should architectural competitions be structured so that reuse becomes the standard rather than a “nice to have”? And how can existing production systems adapt to local material resources while supporting new demand and value chains?

Progress Update from our Experimental Postdoctoral Fellows at: The two Fellows, Noam Attias and Juan Pablo Ugarte (MArch ’14, DDes ’23), continue their research in the context of the GSD’s Laboratory for Design Technologies (LDT).

Attias is advancing her work on fungi as a tool to selectively modify wood properties. She is currently developing a manual prototype as a case study to demonstrate the potential of fungi-modified wood biocomposite in practical design applications. This research is conducted in collaboration with the Arnold Arboretum, where fieldwork and material sampling inform the development of these bio-based processes.The techniques explored here could also be applied at larger scales in construction and architectural projects, offering new ways to rethink how materials are transformed and used in real-world design.

Ugarte is moving forward with his investigation into how interior materials influence prosocial behaviour — such as generosity and moral decision-making – across both sensory and ecological dimensions. He is running controlled spatial experiments comparing “warm” environments (wood and warm-toned finishes) with “cold” ones (metal, tile, grey surfaces) to examine how material qualities shape emotional and behavioural responses.

Experimental Fellows Anna Pomazanna and Mykhailo Shevchenko of are part of the Works+Words 2026 Biennale for Artistic Research in Architecture at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

Under the title “Everything Will Become Soil”, they present key findings from their Experimental Fellowship project Grunt during the symposium and as a video installation at the Aarhus School of Architecture.

The project will be presented across three venues until 10 April 2026. It explores how regenerative material practices can respond to environmental, political, and urban uncertainty.

The first project phase culminated in a prototype pavilion in Lviv — the first structure in Ukraine built from compressed earth blocks (CEBs). The current phase translates this research into practical applications, including a building project using polluted soils in urban and post-industrial contexts, advancing regenerative and circular construction methods toward real-world implementation.
