Caliās rescue took place back in November of 2024. The reason Iām sharing it today is because weāre starting a YouTube channel! As I was trying to decide where to begin, I thought why not start on day one of Expedition Ola with the very first dog we rescued after setting off on this mission!
This is the Instagram version of Caliās rescue story, the version that fits within Instagramās time limits. But thereās so much more to her journey. This evening, 3pm PST, weāll be sharing our very first YouTube video! Rescuing Cali and what the following 48 hours looked likeāØ
We were overwhelmed. Completely in over our heads. We had no idea what was wrong with her, what she needed, or what the road ahead would look like. Everything felt uncertain. But beneath all of that was excitement, purpose, and a deep commitment to helping her. We didnāt know how we were going to do it, but we knew weād figure it out.
We hope youāll join us over there and follow along as we revisit some of the dogs who helped shape Expedition Ola before eventually catching up to our journey in real time as soon as weāre back on the road!
We feel incredibly honored to be the voices for dogs who have been so voiceless, so overlooked, and yet so deserving of love. And weāre excited for another platform where we can continue sharing their storiesš«¶š¼š¾
At the time, we had no idea that rescuing her would completely change the course of our lives. The timing wasnāt right to add another permanent member to our family, but we knew we had to help. So she joined us on our trip, we helped her heal, and then we found her the perfect forever home.
Fast forward 2Ā½ years, weāve rescued 33 street dogs, and weāre finally back to visit Ola in her forever home.
Had we not rescued Ola, who knows what weād be doing with our lives today. Rescuing her gave us so much purpose, healing her was so fulfilling, and loving her was truly an honor and thatās why we decided to start this missionš«¶š¼
Every dog weāve rescued, every forever home weāve celebrated, every life thatās been changed through this mission can be traced back to Ola, this beautiful girl, a street dog we met on a beach in Mexicoš
Bodie was reunited with his birth mama, Bella Reina, who seemed totally shocked but really happy to see Bodie and then made it clear that she loves her home and definitely would not be leaving with usš
Mateo was super stoked to see Bodie and had tons of fun chasing him around at the beach just like the old days hahahašš„²
Millie greeted Bodie with her tail tucked completely thrown off by their reunion but quickly came out of her shell and showed us just how absolutely happy and grateful she is for her new life and forever familyš
And then we saw Olaš Itās been 2Ā½ years since we last saw the dog who inspired this entire mission, and seeing her again honestly made my heart skip a beat! Seeing Ola and Bodie together felt like two worlds colliding. Our life with Timmy. Our life with Bodie. The beginning of Expedition Ola and everything thatās happened sinceš¤
Itās hard to put into words what it feels like to reunite with dogs who we found alone, sick, scared, homeless, and struggling to survive. To see them now, healthy, happy, and living beautiful lives with their forever families, itās definitely the most rewarding part of our mission!
We are exhausted but our hearts are so very fullš«¶š¼
Once she was given the safety, love, and freedom she deserved, she finally felt comfortable enough to show us who sheād been all alongš¤
Bexleyās transformation is one weāll never forgetš¾ Itās also one that lives in our hearts as a reminder that these dogs deserve so much more than survival. We will never stop fighting for them to experience happiness and get the chance to simply be a dog, live in the moment, and run freešš
Felixās forever mama has been sending us updatesš” Seeing him so loved, so adventurous, so comfortable, and so completely at home has brought us so much peaceš

7 years ago today the world truly conspired for us to meet. It was so random, it couldnāt have been by chance. Since then, weāve worked hard to build a life that at one point only existed in our heads. Sometimes I look around at this crazy life weāve created, one filled with rescue dogs, adventures, and so much love, and genuinely canāt believe we really did it.
Thank you for making me feel safe enough to dream this big, and wild enough to actually go live it with meš¾š«¶š¼
When we started this rescue mission, we promised ourselves we wouldnāt keep any of the dogs we rescue. We thought that keeping a dog meant one less spot in our rig and one less life we could save. Bodie was only our second rescue of the mission and we fell in loveš„¹ but we told ourselves we couldnāt keep him.
It didnāt take long for him to show us that we needed him. Our pack needed a leader. We watched as this little scruffy dog helped heal our other rescue dogs. He taught them how to play and have fun! And before they are ready for that he will just lay with them, and show them they are no longer alone.
Not many dogs would thrive in the wild, unpredictable life weāve created but Bodie was made for it! Heās as athletic as he is loyal. Independent, but never far from our side. Most street dogs crave stability and comfort. But not Bodie. He wants to see new places, surf perfect waves, and hike to the top of every mountain. He loves the random detours we make and how he never knows what tomorrow will bring. He loves his revolving door of foster brothers and sisters but also soaks in the extra love when itās just the three of us!
Weāre on this mission to find each dog their perfect match. And although we were reluctant to admit it, we needed him just as much as he needed us! Since making Bodie a permanent member of our family in December 2024, he has helped us rescue 18 street dogs! He is THE STREET DOG THAT RESCUES STREET DOGSš„¹š«¶š¼

Thereās no shelter. No cages. We live in our camper, and so do the dogs we rescue. Theyāre not just āin our careā, theyāre our family. They sleep in our home (on wheels). They wake up to love. Theyāre free to roam, play, and discover the world around them, often for the first time. We donāt leash them or control them. We encourage them to become the dog they were always meant to be.

In 2023 we went on the trip of a lifetime. A surf trip down the pacific coast of Mexico and Central America, every surfers dreamšš¼āāļøāØ About one month into our trip, we pulled in to a small fishing village just south of Acapulco as the sun was setting to find a place to camp for the night. We walked the beach and enjoyed the sunset with our senior dog Timmy and a cute street dog joined us as well. She followed us everywhere that evening, down the beach, to the restaurant for dinner and then to our van once it was time to go to bed. I began thinking of names for her even though Nick warned me not to because he said I would get attached. I didnāt listen, I named her Ola, which means wave in Spanish, fitting since we were chasing waves.
We were only staying in this town for one night and although I wanted to cuddle with Ola, we had to prioritize the health of our dog Timmy not knowing if Ola had any fleas, ticks, or other diseases. We hopped into bed and Ola curled up beneath our van. An hour later we were woken up by a dog fight and when we got out of the van, 4 male dogs were attacking Ola. We fended off the dogs and decided to let Ola sleep in our van for the night where she would be safe and get a good nights rest. She didnāt even try to jump on the bed, she was just so thankful to be somewhere quiet and safe, she curled up on the petals at the foot of the driver seat and slept hard. It was probably her first night ever where she was safe from all that threatens her in the streets, and her first night in peace and quiet.
The next morning, our plan was to hit the road and continue heading south. Ola wouldnāt get out of our van. She would duck and hide below our bed and you could see in her eyes, she was begging for us not to put her back out on the street. We kind of joked about taking her but neither of us serious, it felt too crazy. We already had a dog, we were living in a tiny Astro van, we couldnāt just take this random dogā¦ (caption continued in comments)
