To keep our kiddos safe during water play, we follow these 3 rules:
1. Educators stay within 10 feet of students when near the river and station themselves downstream in case of emergency.
2. We stay at least 5-feet away from water that’s more than 3-feet deep. By doing this, we make sure that the water line is below the average students’ center of gravity, allowing them to self-rescue quickly if they accidentally submerge. If we can’t see the depth of the water, we assume it’s more than 3-feet and keep away.
3. Our student’s know our water entry rules: they can enter fast moving water up to their ankles, and slow moving water up to their shins. But no matter the flow rate, they can’t enter water if a deep area (water deeper than 3-feet) is less than 5-feet away.
By following these three rules, we’ve maintained safe classrooms and camps along the Boise River for the nearly 7 years we’ve been running programs!
